Will bt Made Comfortable In Second Longest Structure of Its Kind - -In Thl Country. When the Disciples of Christ elect ed to hold their 1912 International Convention in the city of Louisville, Ky., they were moved by many con siderations of sentiment. The advan tageous location so near the center of the strength of this people also weighed heavily. However, one very practical consideration was the neces- slty of proper housing of a meeting of such vast proportions. These conventions are attended by many thousands ol people, it is ex pected that not less than twenty thou Band Disciples will be in attendance at Louisville. Fortunately this city is provided with an ideal structure for just such an affair. The Jefferson county armory is the second largest building of its kind in the United States. It contains 4,450, t.00 cubic feet and is fireproof throngh out. The main building, which con slats of three stories and basement. contains quarters for officers, company ooms, lockers, gymnasium, library, veterans' room, etc., and the base meat contains rifle range, general toilet, artillery quarters, mess hall, kitchen, quartermaster department, store room, etc. The great dome of the drill hall rising to a height of 123 feet is just behind the main building. This hall Is spanned by large steel trusses. thus affording clear - floor space of 75,200 square feet. The seating ca pacity of the hall and balconies is about 20,000. This Is an extremely interesting building, being the highest type of its kind in this country, especially structural interest, size and gen eral arrangement. This great gathering, which will be Louisville October 15th to 36d ia- cluslve, wMl be' well provided for a meeting place In this immense structure. In addition ts funviehlng an ade quate' place for the general meetings of the session there are ample spaces for the exhibits of the various socie ties and departments of the church. These exhibits are an instructive and helpful part of , these annual conven ts foreign 34 Jteuae . fc&erfo fc, 2 are here portrayed. Tne uMtobing companies maintain departments for the exhibition ef their books, etc. The armory was first used a few years ago on the occasion, m the great Louisville "Home Coming," when frequently more than twenty thousand people were accommodated the spacious auditorium. As this convention is to be vesy much in the nature of a home coming, it 'Is most fitting that it again be pressed into service. Mammoth Cave Is truly named. It is also - wonderful, marvelous. Even the use of superlatives gives only a faint idea of its grandeur and its beau ty. Stalactites and stalagmites words so hard to remember when first earned in geographies take on the form of fluted columns, of festoons and draperies, of ceiling decorations that would be the despair of a stucco worker. There are great auditoriums with lofty ceilings one where the for- ations resemble a starlit sky domes hundreds of feet high, the sides form ed of tier after tier of fluted columns, balanced rocks and hanging rocks; huge piles of rocks that seemingly have been swirled round and round by underground waters until they have worn great caverns; mighty crevices or clefts as if made by earthquakes barren underground canyons that might be termed underground streams, and a river, the Echo, fifteen to forty feet vide, on which a good sized flat boat transports tourists for a distance of half a mile or so that they may also enjoy the wonderful echoes. A trip to this great natural wonder of the great International Convention is to be one of the interesting features of the Disciples of Christ which will be held in Leulsrllle, Ky., in October of this year.
