press, when the 17. S. A. entered the
big war, when prohibition was forc
ed upon us and last when the consti
tution of Tennessee was raped in or
der that women might vote.- Not
withstanding these three salvations

In the editor's recent trip over the
state he only found two towns out
side of Cookeville where automobile
drivers are allowed to make all the
noise possible with their machines,

MISS CLAY DISAPPROVES
Lexington, Ky., Aug. 23. Emphat
ic disapproval of the action of the
Tennessee Legislature In ratifying
th eSusan B. Anthony suffrage
amendment giving the. women the
right to vote, is voiced here by Miss
Laura Clay, noted woman suffragist
of national celebrity, who has just
returned' to Lexington from Nashville
where she aided in the fight to defeat
the amendment. Miss Clay has been
working for woman suffrage since
1888, but says that she wants to see
it attained only through the state's
bright plan.
"The Susan a. Anthony amend
ment is- useless and mischievous,"
she declared. "I am heavy-hearted at
the prospect of what I believe will
be a disastrous change in our nat
ional affairs. The Susan B. Anthony
amendment has been ratified by the
states without submission a the peo
ple, which takes away the right of the
people to govern themselves. . Every
state can confer womans suffrage it
it wants to. The only thing, that the
Anthony amendment does is to trans
fer he choosing of state electors and
the power to legislate in state elect
ions from the state egislatures to the
national Congress."
Miss Clay went to Nashville at
the request of Miss Kate M. Gordon
of New Orleans, president of the
Southern States Woman Suffrage con
ference, which is opposed to the An
thony amendment, on the grounds
that it takes away the right of the
people of local selt government.
Assertion was made by Miss Clay
that there are several other laws now
under consideration and Just waiting
for a precedent such as the ratifica
tion of the Anthony amendment, so
they can be "put over." Among them
are the uniform divoree law, the uni
form educational law for voting and
several others, none of which is to
be submitted to the. people. The peo
ple were never consulted in the pas
sage of the Anthony amendment, she

night with Miss Sue Vinson.
Mrs. G. W. Slagle has moved (back

There was no Sunday school at
Post Oak Shade Sunday on account
of bad . weather. ,

Putnam County, Tennessee, on Sat
urday, September 4, 1920, tor the pur
