Nashville. Tenn. At the 'annual
meeting; of the Tennessee Farmers'
Union, held in Nashville, J. H. Hoff
man of Gibson county was elected
president, succeeding L. M. Rhodes of
Huntingdon, who has been the head
of the union for several terms.
Mr. Rhodes has been an active work
er for the union and probably enjoys
a larger acquaintance with farmers in
Tennessee than any man: Hoffman,
the new president, was a member of
the state senate in the last general
assembly from Gibson county.
C. W. Hooks of Atwood was re-elected
secretary-treasurer. C. S. Barrett
of Georgia, the national president, was
present and addressed the union. Six
ty counties were represented by coun
ty unions. The sessions of the union
were executive.
TO FIGHT TUBERCULOSIS.
Tennessee Organization Started Anew.

Nashville, Tenn. The Tennessee
Anti-Tuberculosis Association was for
mally reorganized at a meeting held
here. A new constitution and by
laws was adopted and the following
officers were elected: President, Bol
ton Smith, Memphis; vice president,
Henry TetWebaum, Nashville; secre
tary, Mrs. Charles D. Sullivan, Nash
ville; treasurer, John Stagmaier, of
Chattanooga. In addition to the pres
ident and secretary ex-officio the mem
bers of the executive committee are:
Dr. Max Goltman, Memphis; Mrs. K.
P. Jones. Maryville; William R. Pon
der, Johnson City; J. H. Allison, Nash
ville, and Dr. W. N. Lackey, Gallatin.
' The executive committee was au
thorized to accept the state agency
for the ' Red Cross Christmas seals
from the National Association for the
Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis.
1 Corn Clubs Growing.
' Lexington, Tenn. The interest in
the boys' corn' club movement in this
county is growing by leaps and
bounds. Prof. Hugh A. Powers of the
chair of agriculture in the Henderson
County High School and county farm
demonstrator, is pushing the move
ment. He has secured a list of valu
able prizes which are to be awarded
during the county fair ihe last week
in October.
(The prizes have been pledged by
the public spirited merchants of the
town, who have also agreed to give a
number of special prizes.
Attorneys All Dead.
Knoxvllle, Tenn. A queer situation
arose In connection with the suit of
Addle Prince Harrill vs. an eastern
Insurance company, when the hearing
was completed in supreme court. Gen.
James A. Fowler, -counsel for com
plainant, announced that all the attor
neys who had been engadelnthe trial
of the case were now dead. The case
was heard In chancery court two years
ago and a record of over 1,200 type
written pages made. Appealed to the
supreme court, it could not be heard
last year owing to the Illness of at
torneys. ' " ..
Baptists Close Session. -
Selmer, Tenn. The annual meeting
of the Harmony Missionary Baptist
Association wltb Center Hill Church,
near Tula, McNalry county," has ad
journed its three days' session... J. W.
Pennington of Savannah was elected
moderator and L. W. Brown of Ken
drlck, Miss., was elected clerk.
Ship Mules to Britain. ,
Columbia, Tenn. Fifteen carloads
of mules went, out from Columbia, des
tined for service In the English army.
The mules are worth, It Is said, about
$.150 a head. There were 400, in the
shipment. They were shipped to New
port News. Va., where they will be
loaded on transports for England.
Obion Presbytery Closes.
Kenton, ' Tenn. The Obion presby
tery of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church closed a very busy and suc
cessful session at Morrilla' Church.
Rev. Raymon White of Troy, Tenn.,
was elected moderator. The spring
meet.g will be held at Obion, Tenn.
"Madison Presbytery Adjourns.
Bolivar, Tenn. Madison presbytery
of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church, which has been In session
here, has adjourned. This presbytery
is composed .of 43 churches with a
membership of 2,260. : ,
Hospital Changes Hands.
Paris, Tenn. The Hayland Hos
pital has changed bands. Miss Vivien
Pope Coy giving It up to go to similar
work in Little Rock, Ark., and Miss
Florence Hancock, trained nurse In
this city, has taken charge.
Awarded Bosely Scholarship.
Jackson, Tenn. Miss Alma Perry
has been awarded the $100 Bosely
scholarship of the Chicago College of
Music after only one month's compe
tition with 75 contestants.
Rev. Skinner Accepts.
Jackson, Tenn. Rev. J. E. Skinner,
pastor of the Lakeland Baptist Church
of Nashville, has accepted a' call to
the pastorate of this city to succeed
Rev. J. W. Dickens, who has gone to
a Memphis church.
SOLDIER BOYS IN FINE CAMP
Tennessee Lads Now Stationed At
Camp Pershing Near Eagle

Kl Paso, Texas. Tennessee's nattsn
al gusH troops on this part of this
Mexican border are now assembled In
Camp Pershing. They have their
tents all up, kitchens set up and are
as much at home as the oldest com
mands in the big mountainside camp,
after being given two days in which to
set up camp and get their things ar
ranged and to get a first glimpse of El
Paso and Mexico. ,
The cavalry; hospital corps and am
bulance corps are down to routine
drills, maneuvers and other articles
of war scheduled in general orders is
sued by Gen. Bell. The Tennessee
troops witnessed the long parade of
30,000 Infantrymen through the city
and camps.
All are in good health and spirits
and 'are enjoying their experience on
the border.
The Tennessee troops have been
transferred to the border. The troops
are stationed at Eagle Pass, Tex..
about twenty miles inland from the
Rio Grande. The Tennessee boys
took the places vacated by the Penn
sylvania and New York troops, order
ed home.
Ordering out of the Tennessee
troops is In line with the department's
policy of giving all of the guardsmen
called into the federal service a tour
of duty on the border under war con
ditions before they are mustered out
TENNESSEE NURSES MEET.
Publlo Health Problems Discussed By
Noted Specialists.
Memphis, Tfenn. The annual con
ference of the State Association of
East, West and Middle Tennessee
Registered Nurses was opened here
Wednesday with an address of wel
come by City Attorney Bryan. Other
addresses were made by Mrs. L. A.
Warner and Dr. W. H. Flneshriber.
Dr. Max Goltman, who presided, read
a comprehensiye paper on the "Can
cer Problem., He said it is the duty
of doctors and nurses to educate the
people of the country to adopt effec
tive measures for the prevention of
disease. ' . .
"The Associated Charities Nursing
Service has done remarkable work
in the last year," he said, "and as a
result of the activities of the nurses
many protective measures have been
taken to safeguard the public health."

' Social Workers Meet.
Nashville, Tenn To discuss pro
posed social service legislation,' a con
ference of the leading social workers
of Tennessee has been called for two
days, beginning Oct. 17, In the senate
chamber at the capltol, the call hay
ing been signed by Dr.' I. Lewlnthal,
president of the state board of chari
ties. John S. Deaton, president of
the state board of control; Col. A. M.
Shook, president of the Tennessee
Home-Finding Society, and Dr. J. H.
Klrkland, president of the Tennessee
Mental . Hygiene Society. On the
morning of Oct. 17 the 60 directors of
the mental hygiene society will meet
at the capltol preceding the legislative
conference of the afternoon. .
McNalry Clerk Resigns.
Selmer,' Tenn. After ten years of
continuous service, John B. Graham
tendered his resignation as clerk of
the McNalry county circuit court at
Us regular September . term. Judge
Everett named John R. Erwln as the
successor of Mr. Graham. Mr. Gra
ham was one of the most popular pub
llo officials who ever , served the
county.
, Jackson Report Healthy.
Jackson, Tenn. The first annual re
port of the financial condition of the
city of Jackson, under commission gov
ernment is being distributed. It shows
that there have been distinct econ
omies and Increased revenues without
changing the tax rate or assessment
and without Impairing the efficiency
of the municipal government.
Bridge Cass At Trial.
Jackson, Tenn.--E. O. Buck, former
county road engineer, was the first of
400 witnesses to testify In the trial
of J. D. Keith, R. A. Bland and W. J.
Ross, road contractors, indicted on
the charge of attempting to commit a
felony. ' ',

, Georgians Lynch Negro. "
Chattanooga, Tenn. Henry White,
negro, was hanged at Durham. Ga., by
a mob after he had been Identified
and confessed an attempted criminal
assault on a young woman. "
Bluff City Mills Saved.
Bristol, Tenn. The Bluff City flour
ing mills, eleven miles south of Bris
tol, would have been destroyed by firs
but for a speedy ran of a high pres
sure motor engine, with pump attach
ed, which dashed out of Bristol at full
speed. In twenty minutes the engine
was pumping a stream into the blase.

Jackson, Tenn. The Tennessee Syn
odlcal College will be held in Jackson
Oct. S and 6 with the Presbyterian
churches of the city. The meeting was
to have been held at Columbia, but
later was changed to Jackson.

Jackson, Tenn. John T. Stark, who
was elected city recorder by the board
of commissioners, has the unique dis
