Sure, Sal tillo onght to have it, Hon. T. W. Sims has said posi tively that ho will again be a candidate for reelection to Con gress from the Eight;district. The United States Government has abandoned the arsenal at Columbia, Tenn. The equip ment is being moved to Rock Island. The acts passed by the last General Assembly have been printed. It is the largest single volume of acts ever printed by the State. me war ciouu mat hang over France and Turkey last week has Deen removed oy Turkey paying France 700,000 francs for wounded honor. Senator Oarmack says there is no necessity for preaching funer al orations over Mr. Bryan, but thinks it doubtful about his ever running for the presidency again. The noise made about the cus . torn house in Memphis is so great that the Federal officials are talk ing about hunting other quarters where justice can be dealt out with less detraction by noise. The first shovelful of earth thrown up for the construction of a railroad,: designated to carry passengers and freight, was on July 4, 1828, at Baltimore in the construction of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which road still retains its original name. Five men named Givens, all re lated to the girl and a friend of the families uamed Clark, have been placed in the jail at 3ash yille for safe keeping. They are charged with lynching Charles Davis for assaulting a ten year old girl at Smithville. All are white. The people of South Camden, N. got very much excited over exaggerated reports as to an of fence committed by a negro. A mob formed and visited a number of houses occupied by negroes and made threats that every negro. in tho town should be driv en out. The river went down very rap idly when it started, but it got high enough to do a vast amount of damage to the very best corn in the Tonnessee river bottoms. The drouth had not damaged tho lower bottoms as much as the higher lands so that to cover the lower lands with water was to do groat damage. . Tim Selmer & Tennessee Kiv er Valley Railway Company, first organized in 1895, have amended their charter so as to permit the road to run by Adarasvillc, Sa vannah and Waynesboro. If this road will get on a move it may get tho donations now ready in Hardin county for the first road tbat comes along. A very ugly problem is that of the daily crusades against the negro. From every section of the country comes reports of tho white man against the negro.- The antagonism is not confined to any sectioned this fact makes it the more grave. The state of feeling among the whites and their reck lessness of action, unless soon checked must have the gravest consequences. - Educational Matters. Snpt. Gill reports from Morris Chape!, where beheld his meeting on the 21st that seven teachers and fourteen directors were pres ent. The house was crowded with people representing every school district iu the old twelfth. Several directors and parents were there from other counties. At Sibley in the colored school he had a crowded house and found the school in excellent con dition. At Pleasant Hill on the 24th, fifteen teachers were present and the house wouldnot accommodate the crowd. Many said after the meeting that more than one day should have been given to them in which to discuss so important a matter. At Shady Hill on the 27th the Swift band furnished excellent music. During the forenoon the crowded house was edified by many speeches and recitations. The afternoon was spent in dis cussions and school law and everybody said it seemed good to have been there. Few Buffaloes Left. A recent estimate places the number of American bison remain ing alive in the world at 1,024, of which C8t are captive. But it is not possible to be exact iu such a statement, inasmuch as tho wild survivors cannot be rounded up and counted. In the densely wooded region between the Sas katchewan and Peace rivers, in British Columbia, are several bun area uuuaio: tnere are twenty or so in the desert Pan Handle re gion of Northwest Texas, and in the Yellowstone National Park there are fifty or sixty more, it is believed. There are .none at lib erty anywhere elso. These few remaining wild bison are beinu steadily reduced in number. In British Columbia they are being killed off gradually by the Indi ans, wuile those in the Yellow stone Park are potted by poach ers whenever a chance offers. A mounted head of one of these an imals is worth $200, 'and a skin brings a good price. Some Law. This, you know, is human nature. Men are suspiceous and envious and jealous but when a fellow knows that somebody elso has as much or more trouble than he, then of course he's all right. These and a few other characteristics iu human nature make preachers necessary in the plan of civiliza tion. Driving out recently I sudden ly turned a bend in the road and came upon two fellows driuk ing not the first I had seen by several but they were drinking on the sly just the same. Maybe they were from Tennessee, I did not ask but I've hoard them say that mauy Tennesseans do this same naughty trick. As I came around the corner one said, "John, John, put up that bottle, hero comes a preacher," but the bottle was going, glock, glock, glock.glock and John said in rag time., "hio. Mr. Preacher, if it was'nt for fellows like mo you fellows'd be out of a job, would'nt yon!" And I But this has nothing to do with tho reunion. I was just thinking of some of the reunions the col lege boys used to have. Bad, bad bovB. Mr! I wonder now that so many of them made men above the average. This is not egotism. Is it! I don't mean it that way But really now Mr. Editor, you ask your wife and sho will tell you the boys and girls who wero in Savannah College iu the 70's were above the average, sure enough! Now don't you laugh It is bo. Capt Paine will go her security. The boys were nuugh ty, 'tis true, and the guis were pretty, and, by the way, they are still "but that's another story" as Kipliug would say. During the last few years I have looked into thousands of bright faces in our larger cities, in our fashion able towns aud in the country places. Only just a week ago I preached two sermons to 1200 people right under the shadow of old Washington and Jeflerson College, but this sea of bright faces did not dim the picture of Savannah College. It cannot fade or perish. In the after whiles praying and preaching and toil ing and trembling shall cease, but memory and song will live ''while the ages go grinding on" as Man gey, tho - eloquent Methodist preacher said. "Tho tissues of the life to be We weave in colors all our own, And iu tho land of destiny We reap as we have sown. Still shall the soul around it call The memories that it gathered here, And painted on the eternal wall, Tho past shall reappoar." When Elizabeth Akers Allen sung "Rock me to sleep" she touched a chord Ma life's sym phonyor is it a threnody! that wakes a vibration in the human heart as surely as the sound of the violin makes tho strings of tho silent piano tremble with its melody. "Backward, turn back ward" aud "Mother come back from the echoless shore," are the property of the human heart uni versal. Did you ever road Emcr- sons Memory in Quatrains!. Thomas DeQnincy said thai "tho dread book of account men tioned in the Bible is the mind it self of each individual" aud why shall we disbelieve this! Our mental philosophy taught that "memory cieves tho passing mo ment, fixes it upon the canvas and hangs tho picture on the souls inner chamber for her to look upon when she will." T. M.
