TO A tlOLLOSV FBIEND. ' i I .. 1 a ! ones thou seeiuedst a part of ino liy tie that tiona could sever, Now I would bid geod-bye to thee, For evei and for ever. Once I would noter have believed That thon would'it causa me pain, I trusted thee I was deceived, I trust thee not again. The sleepless nights I owe to thee The days of anguish deep, Qo I Though thou bast been dear to me, Thy presence makes me weep. 4 Yea I 0o, though with me thou did'st dwell From early day of youth, Depart along, a last farewell, You wretched hollow tooth. A Tough UooseStory. Thero oaco lived in one of our North ern towns, not many miles from Canway, New Hampshire, au eccentrio individ ual by the hamo of Fog-f, whoso fame, as a story teller, was known for many miles around. Here is one : "My homo was situated in a glen, some six miles distant from the stago road. Between Couway and wltertj I lived was a pond six miles in circumference. It so hap pened, one time early in the spring, I had been out late, and coming home I discovered a flock of geese as they were just alighting in tho pond. Rising ear ly the next morning, I built my tiro in the fireplace, and tuking down the shoot ing iron, started to the pond to try my luck. Arriving at tho shore, I found to my sorrow that they wore out of gun shot and to fire at that distance would : be a sheer folly. "While I stood contem plating what to do, a fox came down to tho water's edge nnd stood snuffng the air. My first thought was to shoot him, but on reflection I concluded to see what . he would do. The fox in the meantime entered the water and was swimming for tho goose, which were huddled together about half a mile from tho shore. After swimming within a few yards of them he suddenly disappeared, and in a few moments a goose was drawn under the wator, then Reynard returned on his homeward passage, and landed his bur den on the shore ; then returning again brought another, until finally he brought flock ; and when ho brought tho last one I shot him. When I camo to pick up tho geeso I fonud that I had fifty good nice ouos ; which I lugged homo togcth erwith the fox and gun. Theold woman had got breakfast quite ready then." , "But, Mi-. Fogg, tho fox to capture tho geeso had to swim half a mile for each goose ; consequently tho fox swam fifty miles, and the geeso averaged six pounds apiece, making tho sum of three hundred pounds, to say nothing of the fox and tho gun ; the thing was iiniiossi- ble." "Impossible or not, every word of it is truth," exclaimed tho old man, "and I can prove it by more than a dozen of my neighbors, to each of whom I sold feathers enough to fill a bed "Exchange. Only A Shadow. A story is told of a well known gen tleman, who sometimes imbibes too free ly of tho ardent, going homo at night recently, and mistaking his shadow, out lined on tho front door, for a man. Ho paused a little in surprise, and then, lift ing his hat very gracefully bado him a good evening. "A very pleasant evening," said the gentleman. No reply. "ThM is my house, I believe," he said, waving his hand. The hand of tho shadow went through tho same graceful curve. "I should liko to get in, sir, if you'll stand aside." but tho shadow made no movement to let him pass. Tho gentleman was evidently surpri sed. Ho repeated his desire to pass in, but tho shadow remained still. His wife, hearing her husband's voice, looked through the window blind, and seeing no one but himself, asked why he didn't come in. "So I woidd, my dear, but this gentle man" (pointing to the shadow) "insists on blocking up tho door." . His wife quietly opened the door, re marking, "that was your shadow." "Indeed," said the puzzled citizen ; "well, now, I thought he was a mighty fine-looking fellow to be so impolite," and went iu. ' Whenever he shows a disposition to remain out late at night his wife has only to remind him of the sh'adow on the doorstep to insure a speedy return. The Darned Thing Wouldn't Go. A native of Cbuttanougn, who has made a fortune by . selling cat-G.li, frogs and leeches, in a rcceut at tempt at "putting on airs," purchased oue of Itiohard's fine pianos, and after getting it homo be couldn't for the lifo of him make it work, so he wrote that he "couldn't find the place to wind it up," and wanted to know at once, so ho "could make the darned thing go." Principally Republicans. A loyal citizen of Indiana, bearing eu phonious patronymic of Loggius, is in the Penitentiary for bigamy and wants to get out. He writes : "It i true I have only eleven months longer to serve, but it is now thought that our proscnt Superintendent will be re moved and a democrat put in bis place, consepuently we fear we will have a Imrd time under a demoeratic Superintendent, as the convicts are principally republicans." Advertising. A humorous writer in uu exchange says that advertising goods "is jest lice snoriu' or takin' a cryin' baby to church. If you sleep in church and dou't snore, bow's folks on the back seats to know you are there t and in regard to tLe baby, folks would never know you could raise one, if, when the nurse takes him to church, bo didn't let off steam. But when he yells out good and strong, everybody, parson and all, t'cel mighty good. They look at him and say to themselves, 'Fine baby, by bokey ! a regular young rhinosser-eow, by guiu 1' . The more ho hollows, the more the people know it, and the more they know it the wore they thiiik about it." Action without judgment is a gun dis charging itself without being aimed ; judgment without action is agun perpet ually uimcl, but never discharged.
