The baby that was found in the drift of weeds in the Mississippi River a few miles above here near Columbus, Ky., has not. been identified vet. Jake Evans and his assistants found it while making- tbeir haul from their fish ing outfit in the river. The little fellow, apparently less than s i x months old, was crying loudly when found. He was securely fastened in the bottom of a skiff on a Iuk urious rug of Oriental design. On a .piece of stationery, indicating that the paper was originally pur- chased from a Cairo, 111., firm, were these words: "He is another Moses. Please be kind to him." This is a clew that mav lead to his identitv. The words were written in a femi- 0 nine hand. A nursing bottle had 0 evidently been placed in the child's mouth, for the half exhausted con tents were silent evidence of the last motherly act of the one who sent the modern Moses on his peril ous trip down the Father of Waters. W." or "W. S. Hickman, Ky., June 25. Emmett Smith and Will Douglass, negroes, engaged in a pistol duel yesterday as the passengers were leaving an excursion boat from Cairo, 111. shootiner E. Riley, white, foreman of the Cumberland Telephone Com pany, of Nashville, and two negroes none fatally. The affray started in a crowd of several hundred people, but the principals were uninjured Uoth were captured and placed in jail. Although there was some fear of lynching, nothing has material ized. The Ohosts Entertain. The supper and entertainment given by the Willing Workers of the Baptist Church last Friday night, was a very unique affair, Wagner's Orchestra was present and rendered some very beautiful numbers. Another most interesting feature was the part played by the ghosts. There was a violin solo by Ghost Sandling, accompanied by Queen Elizabeth. Miss Annie Lau tie Griffin appeared as the ghost o( Little Red Riding Hood and recited Mr. Lea Garth sang a song from The Burgomaster. Miss Donnie Rainey as one of the ghosts recited. ELECTRIC BOLT Knocks Several Men Senseless and Does Other Damage. Hickman, Ky., June 25. Light ning struck the railroad track, on which there were quite a number ot men cefming from the Mengel Box Factory. Three of them, W. P. Hunt, Will Hammond and Albert Evers, were shocked and fell to the ground, while several others fell to their knees. Mr. Hammond was thought to be dead for some time and medical aid had to be sum moned. He was partly paralyzed for a few hours, but soon recovered About five miles from town a hay stack on the farm of Mrs. A. J. Jef frey was struck and burned, making a loss of $80. A tarpaulin over the hay, and worth $22. was also burned. Another storm struck here last night, both the wind and a heavy hail striking here at the same time. This morning about 5 o'clock, while a rather severe storm was raging, lightning struck- Hickman College and tore away a part of the cupola. The loss will not be very h?avy. Jones Dies Suddenly Near McConnell-Fell From Horse. Jas, J, Jones, one of the most prominent farmers in Weakley County, died suddenly Sunday morning at his home near McCon nell. Mr. Jones, in company with a small negro boy, had been to his wbeat field recapping some wheat shocks which had been uncapped during the storm of Saturday night. After the work was finished Mr. Jones mounted his horse, the boy climbed up behind him arid the two started for the house. When about 400 yards from the house Mr. Jonea suddenly complained of being sick and almost simultaneously fell from the saddle to the ground. He ex pired instantly, being dead when assistance reached him. Mr.' Jones was 66 years old. He lived a long useful life and his sud den death is greatly deplored by his large circle of friends. Deceased was a brother of Mrs. W. C. Croft. ' of this city. who. with the other relatives, has the sympathy of the many friends. The burial occurred Monday at Old Bethel church yard. Fulton Leader.
