CHEW IT AFTER EVERY Sealed Tifihf- r? U iff Ridh Decreased Product Reported By Sev eral Members of Congress. Washington, April 18. Alarming reports of decrei sesd fooa produc tion due to scarcity of farm labor have been made by renators and r.embers of the House who have re cently returned to the capital. The repo:ts have sent to Secretary Mer edith cf the Department of Agri culture. Sen. tor Ellison D. Smith of South Carolina, who is Just back from a trip through the South, predicts the countiy will scon be faoe to face with the most serious food famine !u history. Thousands of acres hith erto given over to the production of foodstuffs are lying idle and un furrowed in the States be visited. Simii?.r reports have been made by Senator Capper of Kansan and senators from others of the great food producing States. - Senator Smith declares that while the amount of farm labor last year was 84 per cent of the normal, this year it is only 72 per ceni of normal ,nd il . of an age and character Which are conducive to the highest productivity. The only remedy, in Senator Smith's opinion, is for the manufac turers of articles not classed as ne cessities, ti suspend operations for a time and permit the labor to go back to the farms. He has found that out of thousands of farm boys who went into the military service dur ing the war, only a small percentage have gone back to agriculture la bor; the bulk of them hahve found in the cities work which Is more attractive and more remunerative. If work of this kind could be dropped for a short period Senator Smith believes many of the farm boys would go back to the couatry. Senator Smith intends to address the Senate on the subject some day this week. You can keep your stomach strong, bowels regular and kidneys active by using Prickly Ash Bitters. The N., C. & St. L. and the M. & O. R. R. companies have filed here in the Circuit Court a suit for dam ages against the city jt Union City for $69,000 altogether, setting out in substance the following claims, which have been filed with the at torneys: t ' ' First that no union passenger depot ample and suitable and at all practical can be built in Union City except on the site where the present depot stands. Second, that two depots are im practical and unnecessarily expen sive. Third, that the city of Union City is repudiating its agreement made a few weeks ago with officials of the two roads, which they claim was to defer the building of a union depot for four years and then to build on the present site with an open street deflected down towards the express office. These are the principal grounds of argument to be presented to the jury when the case is called to be heard, and the court will call the case in May next. Just how the railroads expect to establish a contract or agreement between the Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the officials, of the two roads is hard to understand, when the board had not met in its official capacity and when no regu lar meeting had been held. Tihe members of the same will refute the claim of such an agreement. The other points will be contested by the fact3 in the case fully pre pared and ably presented. Sold by Avcritt Electric Co.
