The Commercial, Union City, Tenn FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 192X. REVIVAL MEETING AT THE BAPTIST CHURCH Dr. J. W. GUloa in a Series of High- Power Sermons. The meeting at the Baptist Church is in full swing. Dr. Gillon, of May field, some years ago pastor of the local pulpit, preached his first ser mon Monday morning. He is deliver ing a series of sermons, the topics be ing published and distributed all over tho city. The first three even ing topics are called "Playing the v Devil," etc., and on Wednesday even ing the full title of the topic was "Playing the Devil Yet Some More, or Some Thingo I Would Do to the . Sinners if I Were the Devil to Keep Men from Being Saved - The auditorium and aisles on Wed nesday evening were crowded. There is a large chorus of voices and tho singing is exceptionally fine. Every body seems to be interested. Dr. Gillon began by reading a text and then launched out, assuming for this particular sermon the first per son, or the devil, and the things he would do if he were the devil. The . first would be to discredit and deny tho inspiration of the Bible. The world is full of thi3 to-day. There is an effort to overthrow our govern ment, and the agencies in this work are the anarchists, the I. W. W, and socialists. The first attack is to be made upon the Bible, the funda mental law upon which the Ameri can government is founded. And these, the preacher branded in vivid language as the agencies of hell. If these powers prevail, says the preach er (and they are moving heaven and earth "to destroy the Bible )r-the world will be thrown into a war so horrlble-that the late war will seem in comparison like times of peace. 11 i were the devil," say3 tbe preacher I would next scatter the seed of infidelity in the schools. The State schools and universities" are full of this to-day. They are teach ing the Darwin theory of evolution County Election. The Obion County primary election returns appear in another column of the paper. There was no very great surprise in the general result. Sheriff Watt Cherry, for re-election, led the vote with a total of 3026. Mr. Bob McCain's ' vote was 1318. Mr. Armour Ratliff va3 re elected Trustee by a majority of 683 Mr. Cox, who came out late in the campaign, received a very creditable vote. The totals were Ratliff, 24S7'; Cox, 1804. The Register's race was practically a three-sided contest as follows: Edwards, 1598; Chapel, 1089; Miss Nichols, 980. Tho other candidates for Register ran as fol lows: Noonan, 463; Passmore, S31; Mrs. Marshall, 36. Messrs. Bond and Ruddle, candi dates respectively for County Court Clerk and Clerk of the Circuit Court, had no opposition. The candidates elected are all ex ceptionally fine men. They are good officers, tried and true. There is a good word also for those who failed at the polls. They made a good race, and perhaps some of them in a future election may be successful. The elec tion was quiet and orderly. A good feeling existed between the candi dates and the campaign was remark ably free from questionable politics, It is good at times like these to make such a report. Election Wards. It is very apparent to those who have been in charge of the reoent elections in Union City and Civil Dis trict Number Thirteen that there must be more than one voting pre cinct or ward in the city or district, It has come to a point where there is going to be trouble to get men to serve as election officers. It takes all day to hold the election and un til 11 o'clock at night to-get thru with the count ' and then some of the officers have to go several miles to reach home. There are a number of disagreeable and irksome things about our elections. The poll books are not large enough tu embrace a systematic record, of the vote. They are filled up somehow, but the count is crowded and confusing. We un derstand that this question was raised once before." Certainly there could be no logical ohlection to a division of the vote in- and undermining tho revelation giv- to wards or precincts. On the other They too are. trying hand the advantages would be im portant. One of these, in addition to those already mentioned, would be to expedite the counting of the vote, and tho reports of the entire county would be more promptly returned. There is to be another city election next. January and the County Court should by all means make some pro visions for a better arrangement for the holding of elections. There were 260Q in the last general registration in Number Thirteen, and these peo ple cannot all vote at one polling place in a single day. en in Genesis, to destroy the Bible. "Don't mistake me," says the preacher, "I am talking about your public high schools and universities." i warn you," says the preacher, we are on the toboggan traveling the descent to hell." mu it . ... earm is scourged with race suicide, divorce, murder, and why? Because the devil 13 flanking the highways of our social, political and religious institutions. He stands by and watches the red dragon with it3 midnight revelers, your daughters and mine, in contact with the lust of human leeches. They go out into the darkness of midnight to destroy our homes and tho social standards -established in the book of life. I warn you that tho devil is riding on the top of these midnight motor cars, dancing in fiendish glee as he sends the soula of men and women to hell. bays the preacher, I would take my imps into the church and in the guise of self righteousness un- Fulton County Election. The preacher closed with an Invi tation to come and hear the entire series of sermons. He extended a special invitation to the day serv ices. Rev. McGehee, the pastor, is directing the order -of service, and Dr. Carlton tho music. Road to Samburg. Tho proposed road from Union City to Samburg, which the County High way Commissioners have been under taking to lay out and finance, has not so far made any great headway. There have been three surveys made and the route is yet undecided. The question is whether the Clayton or the ridge route will be accepted, and tbe whole matter was deferred to Mr. Buchanan by the county commission ers. Mr. Buchanan will not decide until he has more advico from the engineers. But as soon as he does, the work of laying out the new and Improving the old roadbed will be gin. v The advantages of this read to Union City are incalculable. - Mr. .Buchanan has been doing some fine road work in the county, and we can rest assured that he can, after he has all the surveys and facts at hand, be depended upon to decide and give us a fine roadway to Reeffoot Lake.
