“Fragments.”
A copy of this interesting and neatly
gotten up little book is before us. \\ e
have given it a careful perusal and deem
it highly creditable to its author. Its
< 011 tents are well arranged, and the pathet
ic, patriotic and comic arc happily blended
in its pages. It is the production of Miss
Jennie Yates, of our village, and she has
our best wishes for her success in the lau
dable profession she has chosen. Indeed,
every citizen of our county should feel a
common interest in the success of this
book. Apart from the real merit it pos
sesses, our fame is identified with that of
the fair authoress, and we should cncour-:
ngo her to persevere in the pursuit of an
avocation so auspiciously begun and so •
happily selected.

The Hews.
The war news of the past fe w days in
dicates that t\ic excitement incident to the
recent invent cmiflicl* in Northern ticurgin
in rapidly subsiding. The reported Con
federate successes are confirmed by the
correspondents of leading -Northern Jour
nals, and a heavy Federal loss, in billed,
wounded, prisoners and artillery, is now
officially admitted. It is claimed, howev
er, that Gen, Ilosccrans is now In a safe
position and that reinforcements are being
rapidly furnished him. f lhe position of
Gen. Burnside seems to be a matter of
uoubt, if we may credit newspaper intelli
gence, for whilst some claim that he has
already formed a junction with Kosecrans.
others locate him at Knoxville, about GO
miles distant. Dp to present writing,
there are no indications of a speedy re
sumption of hostilities in this quarter.
The latest advices from the army of the
I’otouiae report “all quiet in front.”
From Charleston we have nothing of a
late date, and we opine, that a temporary
suspension of operations iu this quarter is
the basis upon this reticence is
founded.
Late Federal reports from Arkansas
show that some slight advantages have
been recently gained over the Confede
rates in that quarter.
Late European intelligence shows that
the question of Southern recognition is
still being mooted in Paris, but nothing
definite is known as to what w.ll be the
fiuial determination of his Imperial Ma
jesty. Lord John Russell is reported to
have issued a positive order for the deten
tion of the steam rams, said to have been
built upon Confederate account, and they
will not be permitted to leave Kngland
until their real destination shall be made
known. This fact indicates an improved
state of feeling l>ctwoeu this Government
and England.
It is reported that Gen. Burnside has
resigned and that Gen. Hooker has been
named as his successor.

Amongst other projects the recognition
