TOWN WEEKLY MAGAZINE SECTION "STAR GAZING" with Urie Megahan STUDIO MOGULS often wish they could censor the news papers that their young players read. At times when a newcomer is being deluged with praise from the critics, producers begin tearing their hair, for too many times do the starlets acquire an inflated ego from reading these writeups. Consequently the producer is occasionally compelled to call successful beginners into his office to take the wind out of their sails. Under an overload of accla mation from the press of the na tion, Wayne Morris has stood up remarkably well. He admittedly stole the show from Edward G. Robinson and Bette Davis in “Kid Galahad,” but he has maintained a fairly level head and a sense of humor. He tells how his fellow players in “Submarine D-l” helped him in this respect. “One woman writer almost got me. She said that I had ‘a smile like all outdoors when the sun is shining.’ Then I caught myself one morning, a few days later, smiling at myself in the mirror. “It might have ruined me if Frank McHugh, Pat O’Brien and George Brent hadn’t read it somewhere, too. They called me ‘sunshine boy.’ If you ever want to reduce your opinion of your self, just let Pat O’Brien point you out as the ‘sunshine boy.’ ” THE CHAIN LETTER craze, which a few years ago threat ened to become a national men ace and at the time was con cerned with such sordid and materialistic thing as money, seems to be in for a revival— only this time it’s turned ro mantic. That seems to be a fair con clusion from a survey of the fan mail departments where, in recent weeks, definite evidence of a chain letter system of bringing pressure to bear on studios to link screen favorites in pictures have come to light. A check-up of studios shows that they have been receiving a unusually large amount of let ters requesting that certain players be given romantic roles together—irrespective of whe ther players mentioned are em ployed by that studio. That the flood of letters has a common inspiration is apparent by the fact that all of them list the same pairings they want to see on the screen. Among the romantic hook-ups the chain letter writers favor are Bette Davis and Gary Coop er, Carole Lombard and William Powell, Kay Francis and Cary Grant, Robert Taylor and Mir iam Hopkins, Errol Flynn and Claudette Colbert, Jeanette Mac- Donald and Dick Powell in musicals, and Hugh Herbert and Isabel Jeans in comedies. AND SPEAKING of romantic teams, possibly some of you have noticed recently the new trend—that of married Holly wood couples co-starring in pictures. Frances Dee (Mrs. McCrea) co-starred as principals of “Wells Fargo” this, despite their vow of some years stand ing never to grace the same film together. Similarly, Joan Crawford and Franehot Tone have recently ap peared together in “The Bride Wore Red.” Wedding bells had hardly rang out foV Betty Grable and' Jackie Coogan ere they were cast together in “College Swing.” Jo; n Blondell and Dick Powell were fearlessly teamed in “Stage Struck.” The day will no doubt come when you’ll see John Barrymore and Elaine Barrie in the ame reels, and also Jean ette MacDonald and Gem Ray mond, Anne Shirley and John Payne, and others. “MADALYN” will be 7 ise Ranier’s next with Ji*. -s Stewart and Wallace Beery op posite . . . Did you know that Gary Cooper is a dead ringei for Orville Wright, of pioneer aviation fame? . . . Most ex clusive club in the film colony is the “Twin Club.” Bing Cros by, Charles Starrett, Lawrence Tibbett and Richard Dix are the only stars whose double parentage entitles them to a membership.
