Satered at the Postoffice at Pocomoke City, Maryland, as Second Class Matter NATIONAL EDITORIAL. IMLW ASSOCIATION HIT - - - - _ FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1942 Somerset Co. Labor Group Holds Meeting (Continued from Page 1) urges farmers to register their labor requirements with his office. Labor is also urged to register so that they can be placed promptly where needed. The Farm Security Administration is now constructing a Migratory Labor Camp near the fire tower on the West over to Pocomoke road. The manager of the camp will be Mr. John O’Mal ley. There will be an employment office at the camp where farmers can apply for harvest help. It was the opinion of the meeting that the Compulsory Woi’k Act of 1917 should be reenacted by procla mation of the Governor. It was also the opinion of the meeting that there should be an investigation made of unemployment compensation which is being paid in the county and if any cases are found whei*e compensation is being received by unemployed labor, which is not justified with the urgent need for farm labor, that prop, er legal action be taken as was done in Wicomico and also in Worcester, where a case is now pending. In the Wicomico County case a fine of $50.00 was made by the magistrate. States Attorney Kirk Maddrix, Sheriff Fred Phoebus, and his deputy, together with the town officers of Princess Anne and Crisfield, and Sgt. Paul J. Randall, heading members of the State Police, visited these communi ties and other sections of the county to check on those who were loafing to determine their draft status. Men who were apparently loafing and who were not in the towns for business reasons, w'ere asked to show their reg istration cards, and if the cards showed a deferred classification for dependents, they were asked why they were not employed in order to support these dependents. The county Draft Bard is cooperat ing with the law enforcement officers and have promised that cases of un employed men who have received de ferred classification, either from the fact that they have dependents, or are engaged in essential work, that these cases will be reviewed by the draft board and the unemployed men will be subject to reclassification for Class 1-A and be subject to an early call for military service. Farmers of the county have made every effort to increase their produc tiontion of food crops, like tomatoes, the school officials have cooperated by closing schools early so that the school children can assist in the crop harvest, and it is not expected that the public will permit crops to be lost through the failure of help to harvest these crops if such labor is now in the country and is not working and I Notice To Merchants I STATE LICENSE TO CONDUCT BUSI NESS IN WORCESTER COUNTY AH persons and corporations requiring- a license in the con duct of their business are hereby notified to obtain a license or renew the same during the month of May, 1942, the li cense year beginning the First Day Of May, 1942 A penalty of 10% per month will be charged for failure to renew licenses before June 1, 1942. ' Farmers have the right to report , the names of any unemployed able ’ bodied men in their communities to - the county draft board, with the re { quest that they investigate their class ification and the draft board gives as r surance that they will give these cases their prompt attention. > | " — 1 ■ "" : READY TO SERVE YOU ; AT ALL TIMES 7 !
