The following letter received by Dr Dare from H. B. Gayley, M. D., of New York, will interest our readers, in view of the mad dog excitement now prevailing. Mr. Bharpless’son, who was bitten two vreeks ago near Vinegar Hill, was sent to New York on Tuesday last to be treated by Dr. Gibier. 120 Broadway, New York. Du. Geo. 8. Dare, Dear Sir :—Vou r favor asking for information about the Pasteur Insti tute lately started in this city, at hand. I haye given the matter what attention I could and lvive investigated as far as possible in the limited time I have had. The physician in charge is Paul Gibier,, a pupil of Pasteur, having worked with him tor a number of years at his institute in Paris and hav ing given four years to the study of Rabies. He is considered an expert scientist and an eminent physician. 1 send you a number of dippings from Evening Item on Dr. Gibier and his work. You will see that lie is spoken of in the highest terms. The gentleman who wrote the article of the 18lh, with whom I had a conversation to day, assured me that he had gone very thoroughly into the matter and that there was no question of the ability of Dr. Gibier, and that he was an eminent man in his line. He has been treating patients only for a short time in this country. Since he began he lias been treating quite a number of patients who hud been bitten by dogs. I called on Dr. Gibier to-day at his office. He is a pleasant man and im presses you with the enthusiasm he lias for his line of work. He is work ing on the lines laid down by Pasteur and giving exactly the same treatment that is administered in Paris. He said that the success met with under their improved methods of treatment was very great, the death rute averaging a very few in two hundred and that of the last one thousand inoculated in Paris, not one had died. He urged that the boy be sent on to him immediately, so that the disease might be taken in its early stages. The hour at which he inoculates is between 2 and 3 of each day. If you conclude to send the boy on he desires a portion of the brain of the dog sent to him in gljeerine or the whole head packed in ice He can tell from an examination whether the dog was really rabid and hence wheth er there is any cause for alarm. From my investigations. I am of the opinion that the boy would receive exaedy tlie same tieutment he would receive at Paris, with the gain of having it ap plied about 10 days ear ier. It is claim ed that the treatment will not injure at any rate. Dr Gibier’s address is 178 West 10th St.. New York City. If I can be of any further assistance to you in this matter, kindly commu nicate with me. Yours very truly, Henry B. Gayley. Feb. 27th,’90. .<■ Public Sales. March 7. —Wm. E.
