Queen Mother’s Gift Bible.
Upon one of his journeys during the
Antarctic expedition Sir Ernest Shnck
leton was obliged to reduce his lug
gage to the smallest possible amount.
He states that up to this point the
Bible given by Queen Alexandra to the
ship’s library (provided by the British
and Foreign Sailors’ society) had been
carried with the party. In leaving
other things behind it was decided
with reluctance that this also must be
abandoned.
As the Bible contained on Its fly leaf
a message written by Queen Alexan
dra, the fly leaf was cut out. also the
page containing the Twenty-third
psalm, and the chapter in the Book of
Job which speaks of the sea being fro
zen. These three pages were carried
to the end of the journey amd brought
back to this country.
Sir Ernest has promised to present
the three pages to tije society to be
sold on behalf of its funds.

Virtually All Northern End Of City
Laid In Waste And Property
Damage Will Run Into
Millions.
Halifax, N. S.—With the toll of dead
steadily mounting, it is believed that
more than 2,000 persons perished in
the explosion and fire which followed
the collision in Halifax harbor be
tween the munition laden French
ship Mont Blanc and loma, loaded
with supplies for the Belgian Relief
Commission.
The disaster, which has plunged the
Dominion into mourning, probably will
rank as the most fearful that ever oc
curred on the American continent.
'Residents of Halifax and thousands
of volunteer relief workers have been
almost dazed at the extent of the
horrors.
Thousands of persons were injured
and it is expected many of them will
die.
Virtually all the north end of the
city was laid waste, and the property
damage will run far into the millions.
A part of the town of Dartmouth,
across the harbor from Halifax, was
also wrecked Nearly all the build
ings in the dockyard there are in
ruins.
The acme of destruction in Halifax
itself extends from the North Street
Railway Station as far north as Afric
ville to Bedford Basin, and oovers an
area of about two square miles in the
section known as Richmond. The
buildings which were not demolished
by the force of the terrific explosion
were destroyed by the Bee which fol
lowed.
Scores of persons were injured by
the collapse of the railway station.
Arena rink, military gymnasium, sugar
refinery and elevator.
The crew of the Mont Blanc escaped
safely from the blazing vessel. The
pilot asserts the collision was due to
confusion of signal whistles.
The collision, which resulted in
probably the worst disaster in the his
tory of the Dominion, occurred near
Pier &, in the narrows leading from
the harbor to Bedford basin. The
munitions ship was bound from New
York for Bedford basin, when the re
lief ship lerma, bound for sea, crashed
into her.
The Mont Blanc was pierced on the
port side almost to the engine room.
The other ship, which was only slight
ly damaged, backed away when flames
burst out on the munitions ship and
was abandoned by the crew.
The captain of the Mont Blanc also
ordered his crew to the boats, as he
realized an explosion was Inevitable.
The men reached shore safely before
the tremendous blast seventeen min
utes later which blew their ship to
pieces and wrecked a large part of
the city.
The business life of the city had just
begun for the day when the town was
shaken to Its foundations by the ex
plosion. Persons in the street were
picked up bodily and hurled to the
ground. Occupants of office buildings
cowered under a shower of falling
glass and plaster. Houses in the
Richmond section crumpled up and
collapsed, burying their tenants.
In the main part of the city where
the buildings are chiefly of stone or
concrete the damage was confined to
the shattering of windows and most
of the casualties in this section were
caused by flying glass.
TO COMMISSION RUTH LAW.
Resolution Opening Army Gates To
Women Introduced.
Washington.—A resolution designed
to permit Ruth Law, the aviatrice, to
be commissioned in the army avia
tion corps was introduced by Repre
sentative Hulbert, of New York. In
cidentally, it would authorize army en
listment of women between 18 and 35
in the discretion of the President and
Secretary of War.
World War in Brief
The carefully laid plans of General
Byng, the British commander, to with
draw his troops at various points on
the Cambrai salient to more tenable
positions, have been carried out in
perfect order and apparently without
the Germans even having knowledge
of the movement.
The falling back was made neces
sary by wedges driven into the salient
last week by the Germans, which on
several sectors threatened disaster to
the British should they continue to
hold their positions. From an arc ex
tending before Cambrai, a distance of
about 18 miles, the new British front
has been lessened to a length of about
10 miles, with the bases resting in the
north in the region of Moeuvres and
til the south near Gonnelieu.

now gathering postmarks of letters
sent from the American camps in
France, tfhich are stamped “U. S.
Army Postnl Service.” They figure
that If anything definite results from
the peace talk, the expeditionary
force’s postmark will be valuable be

believe that most of the letters com
ing to the United States from the sol
diers abroad are sent to close friends
and relatives who, for sentimental rea
