Tempo of Tories 9 Attack on Labor Mounting Daily By JOHN T. JONES CIO Legislative Representative Director. Labor's Non-Partisan League The fury of the reactionary at-1 tack upon labor In Congress Is increasing daily. Chairman Sumners of the House Judiciary Committee which Is holding hearings on anti strike legislation, threatened workers In defense strikes with the electric chair. Congressman Leland Ford, arch reactionary of California Introduced a bill >H. It 4223) which would impose the death penalty upon workers if anyone gets killed In a strike, no matter through whose fnult. and would make workers "guilty of treason" if they participated In. or as sisted a strike in a defense in dustry. Such participation would be punished by a 25 year prison sentence, without parole. Congressman Hoffman intro duced a bill <H.ft. 4040) which would give J. Edgar Hoover the right to go into any defense in dustry strikes and call out Fed eral troops for the protection of scabs. SMITH WANTS I’HOHK Congressman Howard Smith, who. by his attacks on the Labor Act. has encouraged employers to violate this law. has intro duced a bill. H. Res. 160. which provides for the re-establishment of the Smith investigation of the Labor Board. New attacks upon labor unions, through Congrcsronal commit tees may be started as a result of a resolution passed by the House with one dissenting vote |on April 2. This resolution <H. Res. 162> authorizes the House Naval and Military Allairs Com mittees to conduct investigations on all matters relating to de fense orders. Chairman Vinson of the Naval Affairs Committee, who is author of an anti-strike bill, has already announced that his investigation will Include strikes and union activities.
