CITY PMNTEB.—It will be observed by the proceedings of the City Council that we have been elected City Printer for the ensu ing year. This is rery appropriate, for the VOLUNTEEB has a much large, circulation in this city than any other paper in the coun- ty. W I DUCKS AND PIGEONS hare made 'their appearance in great numbers, and if it was not for the high price of powder and iead, they would be made to rue the day they came. We have a distinct recollection of slaving thirteen great Mallards one after noon a few years ago, but wo make no threats this year. THOMPSON has just returned from New Ifork, where he has been purchasing his spring stock of Dry Goods. He says he »has purchased a splendid stock, that will be beie a9 soon as the Lake opens. Thomp son always aims to keep the best kind of .goods, and his store is the place to go to buy. He has a superior stock of dress and cloak goods, and while in New York he purchased from Madame Demorest, the Queen of Fashion, a nam bar of the Spring fashion patterns, which can be seen and ex amined at his store. MR. LACKER-TV, tho clothing merchant, has got back. He has been to the clothiiig Emporiums of the East, and has selected large stock with great care. He has to waite for navigation to open before his goods will get here. In addition to a large stock of clothing, 'he has laid in a large and well selected stock of dry goods. "CHEAP Jons,'' is soon to stirt for the East to purchase his stock. He has been 'too much crowded since he has been here, and has been unable to develope hi-s busi ness talent "but now he bagins to see his *way clear. He has rented Itooaf Lawther's 'new stores, and when they ara finished will *move in with a tremendous great steck of new goods—clothing, dry goods, boots and shoe*, bats and caps &c, &c. Stand back there Don't get in Eisenbrand's way. COUNTY POOR FAIJM—The Chairman of the County Board have called a meeting for next Friday, to take into consideration the question of buying a farm for a county poor iarm. Wo understand that the piace spok en of is Mr William's farm on Spring creek. This is in oar judgement one of the very best in the country, and is offered re tnarkably cheap—three thousand dollars.— There is about 200 acres of land, nearly 100 acres of which id broken up and fenced. The purchase of this, or some other equally good place will be the bes£_a|^hat has yet been dune for the count a tvilp SKI.KCT YOUR LOT. It is" particularly desirable that thc»citixens come up and se lect their lot in the cemetery as soon as pos.sibb. The city has made a good road and appropriated money enough to fence it in, which will be done this spring. The money derived from the sale of lots is in tended to be used ontircly in improving the ground, and it would be an excellent thing of two or three hundred trees could be se° out there this spring. Ifthoso of the cit izens of Red Wing who intend to take lots will do so soon, the city council will see the money is properly expended. BEAUTIFTTHK LOT.—Tha County Com missioners have voted to fence the Court House lot this spring,-and they have ap pointed a committee ip.see that the Work is done promptly and well,. This is good RQ far as it goes but the lot wilj still look barren without some trees being set out. It ia properly the duty of thy county to fence the lot, as a protection to the county prop erty but when we come to apeak about beautifiying it, that is a. matter that ap peals more directly to the interest and the pride of the city. The Commissioners would' not hare voted the fence had they not received assurance .that the trees would be set out by theciti eena. The city council will not appropriate anything for && purpose, for they already place for every doI| *ler. W Uik now is in, or will come into the treasury this sr the cU«eo, most & -of this ^Hatter. Lot us get regular hee, sod •«-i« um -, #d «tm S*KjjM* ADTKSTisK«sn.— It used to supposed that the greater lie a merchant yomld tell in an adrertiesment, the greater woul,d be hi. success. But.that falsa idem1 GAnnnVHstM- Tk. 1 W SADDLES.—Watson manufactures out ofpatronage the very best material, and ift the very best style, both ladies and gentlemens saddles of superior quality. The season for horseback riding is coming on, and we thought it would be well to mention that fact. If any person wants saddle of superior finish, they need not go beyond Watson's shop for it, DON'T USE SODA—Nor any of the com mon kinds of Saleratus in making bread, if you value health and desire have bread that is palatable. Always use De Land's Chemical Saleratus, and you will have a pure article. It may be had at the grocers. W E are under obligation to our old friend Lt. W. W. DeKay, alia* Deacon, for regular supply of Little Rock, Ark., pa pen. LAWVHEB'S BLOCK.—Lawther is putting his block right up. When it is finished it will be an ornament to the city, and afford to the business of the place an acorn mods* tion very much needed. All the stores and part of the offices are already rented. IN the Republican of last week, Mr. Lit tlefield acknowledges that the city ticket just elected is a good one—one with which there is no cause to find fault, but he says it could easily have been beaten. Did Mr. Littlefiell want it beaten SCHOOL MEETING.—There is to be a school meeting of the legal voters of this district at the District School House in this city on Friday evening next, one object, and the principal object of which is to vole a tax to build a school house or to build school houses. At this meeting it will be definite ly settled whether we shall have one good central school house that will tu commodate all the scholars in the district, and which will be a credit to the district, or have three or four little affairs scattered around in the remote portions of the city. The latter proposition is urged by some influential men, and will be well be defend ed at that meeting and it stands those in favor of a good central school hou-e well in hand to be out to that meeting. The prin cipal argument that we haver heard used in favor of several school houses is. that it is too far for little children to go to a cen trul*school from the remote portions of the city in tempestuous weather. There are but few who will be at that meeting that have not acquired what litt le knowledge we have at public schools more remote from our homes than a school on our newly pur chased lots is from any portion of the city. But there is one incontrovable argument that overcomes that objection entirely. When it is too stormy or boistrous for a chili to go from any part of this city to a central school, it is too stormy and boistrous for that chilil to le-ve home to go even the shortest distance at which by any potsibili ty the school house could be located from his residence. It is all nonsenco to send very small children to school at all. It is more fre quently done to get rid of them for the time, than with the hope or expectation that they will learn anything. Children ou^ht not to be sent to school, nr per mittei to go until they are large enough to go, in any kind of weather that it is suits blc for a child to he out of doors, as far as from the most remote parts of tbo city to the central school. But there is another consideration wo will mem ion we have purchased a large lot at a large cost, sufficient for the accom modation of all the scholars now in the district, or that will be within the district in the next twenty years. By judicious, progressive taxation we can build a suita ble house thereon to accommoda those scholars. We cannot build three houses without purchasing twe other lots, which does not strike us as good policy. But we shall be content with whatever majority of the vrtes determine upon. AH ws want is a full representation, and we have no doubt the meeting will set for the best interest of the district. MAOAZINKDOX.—The LADIE'S REPOSITO ST conies tons with the regularity of clock work. It is always welcome, and. always anxiously waited for, because it is a well filled storehouse of useful, interesti and religious knowledge. Our citizens are urged to make im mediate purchase of lots, to enable the Coun cil to make the needed improvement of the Cemetery grounds. No time is to be lost and this most lauda ble object wril, it is hoped, stimulate our citi zens to respond promptly to this call. No worthier or better act can be done. The plat of the Cemeterv can be seen by calling at my office, or upon the City Recorder, who will give all needed information.
