The persons who were arrested on the charge of operating a merry-go round against the au thority of the oflicers of the 14th of June celebration and also the township board, were tried on the loth and 21st. One of the offenders was tried seperately on the loth, and the other two on the 21st. The first one that was tried was before the justice of the peace without a jury, and the other two were tried be fore a jury. The jurymen were Julius Brown, E C. Lerche, Wra. Bru nette, Frank Brunette, Wm. Leecy and Allen Beaupre. The one tried before the justice was fined fifteen dollars and costs, V/i ^^r,:*-"^fvs iY !*MT- "y RED LAKE, MINK. MAY 22, 1910. Pursuant to Article five (5) of the Constitution of the General Council of Minnesota Chippewas, notice is hereby given that the next annual meeting of the Council will be held at Bern idji, Minn., July 11, 101(5. at 1:00 P. M. The basis of representation to the Councils of this organization shall be one delegate for each one hundred members or the major fraction there of, of the White Earth and Red Lake Reservations, and Reservations ceded under the provisions of the Act of Congress of January fourteenth, eighteen hundred and eighty-nine (25 IT. S. Stats. (542). Such delegates shall be elected on the first Tuesday in June of each year, by the local councils of said reservations and ceded reservations. All chiefs of bands are ex-oilicio delegates to the meetings of the General Council in addition to regularly elected dele gates." In the event of their bein.tr no local council on any of the Reservations or ceded Reservations, it is suggested that the Executive Committeeman of such Reservations, or ceded Reserva tions, organize one for the proper election of delegates. After election of delegates the Secretary of the local council should notify the Secretary of the General Council. It is urged that each delegation have proper credentials for presenta tion to credentials committee before they are seated in the Council. J. G. MORRISON Jr. President of General Council. Attest: P. II. BEAULIEU, Sec. of General Council. but his attorney, after the sen tence was imposed, asked for a dismissal upon the grounds that more than three days had elapsed since the case had been submitted to the justice. The prosecution objected very strenously to this and asked that the sentence be suspended for one week for the purpose of looking up authorities in support of his contention, but the justice immediately dismissed the prisoner. The attorney for the defendant had stated at the time that the justice announced his intention of reserving his decision until the arrival of the county at torney, that this was satisfactory to him. The jury trial resulted in the acquittal of the defendants altho Julius Brown, who had acted as the president of the 14th of June celebration, had, in that capacity, given a written notice to the own ers of the merry-go-round to not erect and operate it on the cele bration grounds, or adjoining them. E. C. Lerche was another jury man whose actions in agreeing to bring a verdict were peculiar in view of the fact that he was one of the most active persons in induc ing Mr. LaChappelle to cause some action to be taken to sup press the operation of the merry go-round. Some of the persons who were involvod in the street controversy of last year no doubt had something to do with the jury's decision since some of them were active in the prosecution of the merry-go-round case and are not on good terms with at least one of the jurymen. A Poor Mail Service. Last Thursday no mail was re ceived at this place in the morning simply because the mail carrier would not venture out in the rain it is claimed. Neither was the mail taken to the railroad station, so that in both instances the in terests of the public was disre garded. It is charged that the transpor tation of the mail by the present mail carrier has been very lax during the past six or eight months. If this is true he should be reported to the post office de partment. Furthermore, inquiry should be made of the postmaster if he has reported the delinquency. Pay your subscription now.
