A new counterfeit half-dollar is said to be made of copper alloy, plated with silver, and is very nearly of full weight* A ripple of excitement was created on our streets last Fiiday, caused by a horse hitched to a cutter, taking a lively run up Minnesota street. Our readers will make some allow ance for the shortcomings ic this week's issue, the editor in charge hav ing been called home last Saturday morning At Sleepy Eye, wood has been a scarce article and commanded a high prize for some time $6.00 per cord was the prize for basswood, other kinds of wood in proportion. 1 Hall was Saturday It The dress ball at Turner postponed from Friday to evening on account of the storm, was one of the most pleasand affairs of this season. Many farmers believe that a winter with plenty of snow will sure ly be followed by a bountiful cop If their conceit is well founded, look out for good times after the next crop. The European wheat crop promises to be apoor one and the effect of this announcement by the London Times was a raise of about 3 cents a bushel on wheat in Chicago Feb. 14th, pro visions and other grains following suit. The storm of last Friday was one of the worst we have had during the present Very stormy winter. All trains were suspended on Thursday evening and it took them till Monday befoie the road was cleared for the reg ular running of trains. A novel piece of mechanism has just been patented in the shape of a fan circular form attached to a sew ing machine which rotates the fan thus fan ung the lady while sew ing. Such are the Cherry Pec toral, the Sarsaparilla, and other standaid remedies of Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co. They are worth all they cost, and should be in every house. Friday the 2nd of Feb. was Candle mas day. The ground hog came out ot his hole, we suppose, and not being able to see his shadow is still o.it, and. if there is anything in this sign, the back bone of winter is broken, and fine weather from now on may be looked for. The St. Peter Tribune says the cloth peddlers are around ag tin and report says they are doing a good bu siness They sell cheap gooas at big pi ices and take the farmers' notes, sell the notes and skip. That's what they were doing on Monday in St. Peter selling notes. Who are the lucky farmers? We can not help art mug at the con clusion that there must be some very unjust people in our burg. We have often sesu cows and horses standing around and trying to seek shelter from the bitter cold and wind. Some even leave tliem out all night. The experience of Cincinnati and other southern points with floods, may yet be ours when the tremendous body of snow that now covers the ground begins to melt. Every possible pre caution should be taken, when the thaw begins, to open channels for its free outflow to the river, and to turn it away from cellars and basements. An ounce ot prevention is worth a pound of cure. Representative Turrell, of Redwood county, last Saturday introduced a bill providing for organising anew county to bt knownas the county of Lanber* ion. The bill provides that the coun ty, shall consist of thirteen towns, eight of which are to come from Redwood county, three from Cottonwood county and two, Stately and North Star, from Brown county. It is not probable that the bill will pass. A telegram to the New Ulm Post an nounces the death of Mrs. Nasgele, wife of Mr. L. Nsege.e of the Freit Preste, of Minneapolis. Mrs. Nwgele died on Tuesday, Feb. 13,1883 after a long and painful illness. Mr. Nsegele and his family have recided in New Ulm for many years and have quite a large circle of friends, who extend their sympathy to Mr. Nagele in this his very sad bereavement. Waseca is making stiong efforts to have the next annual encampment of the N. G. at that plpce. New Ulm offers the beBt iuducemeuts for having it nere, the communication by rail be ing the only draw-back it has. Let the citizens generally make it mani fest that they want the encampment here, and the boys will undoubtedly meet here. The new combination letter sheet envelope and folding postal cards will ton be in circulation* The letter sheet is about the size of ordinary let ter paper. When written upon it is to be folded twice from the bottom, and once from the right side, which makes it the size of an ordinary envelope. The folding postal card is half the size of the letter sheet, and has only a gummed flap at the top. A young man from Murray county has been in New Ulm for some two weeks past with a pair of horses for sale, and failing to dispose of them on satisfactory terms lie started for his home in Murray county last Thursday. He was overtaken by the storm in Friday and had a very nar tow escape and it is thought if he reaches home safe he will be extreme ly lucky. Rev. Gebhardt and daughter made their appearance at the M. Mr. Bobleter 1 tst week introduced and had paseed in the House of Repre sentatives, a memoiial to Congress, asking that the head of navigati of the Minnesota river be fixed at New Ulm. A bill is now pending in Con gress fixing the head of navigation at the south-east border of Redwood coun ty If the bill is amended, as proposed by Mr. Bobleter's memorial, it would enable our people to bridge the Minne sota at this place without putting in an expensive draw. Snow blockades are endurable when confined to business matters, or social pleasures, but when they inter cept and indefinitely delay matrimoni al eugageraentd, they exceed their legit imtte premises. Mankato Review. "The paopU of southern Minnesota ask at the hands of their Representative* some restraining legislation in regard to railroad tariffs and als in regard to the inspection and grade of wheat. They do not ask or expect that any injustice or wrong shall be done the railroads in matters of legislation, but they do ask and ex pect that these corporations be made to respect and perform their duties as common carrien, and that the policy of surimination and favoritism of the past be provided against." If adjournments are taken as often the remainder of the legislative session as so farwhich is hardly likely, in the disposition which has been manifested since the senatorial contest endedbut 14 legislature days remain to complete the session, which closes Saturday, March 3. There aro already on the two calendars probably 100 bills to dis pose of, and as many more may br in troduced. It is a matter of arithmetic that the hands of all art* full, but in the present temper the work will be done. In the five days' work ending Feb. 0th more was probably accom plished than in all the 20 dajs that the senatorial fight bung on. Perhaps few are aware that a liter ary society is flourishing in our midst for some months. The society moots weekly, on Wednesday evening at any place agreed upon. The last meeting was at the residence of A. W. Bing ham and the next will, for the second time, be at that of C. H. Ross. The exercises consist of readings, recitationa music, charades and debates. The bill to fix* the time of holding ing the genertl terms of the district courts in the Ninth Judicial district, introduced by Senrtor Peterson, pass ed the House last Saturday and it has been approved by the Governor. Un der the law, general terms of court will be held in the several counties comprising the district as follows: ICOLLETOn the fourth Monday of Apiil and the fourth Monday of Oc tober. An exchange says something should be done by the Legislature this winter regarding the registering of chattel mortgages. The present plan of hav ing to run here and there and all over the county to huut up town clerks to file chattel mortgages is an abo ninable nuisance, goo I enough for the dark ages but should be dona away with in this enlightened age. The legislator who will frame a bill requiring that all ch tttel mortgages be recorded in the office of the Register of Ddeds of each ounty would be doing something for the benefit of the people of the whole state. The to Clerks won11 certain, ly be very glad to be relieved from the trouble of tving to file chattel mort tges, but we doubt the justice of such a law as it would be, as a general rule very convenient to the holders of chat tel mortgages, but very inconvenient to the poor class who as a rule are the makers, besides it is not necessary to run every where to find a town cl erk The papers are left at his office and he files them when he returns.
