Little Martha Hanson died last Tues
day inorniug.aged seven years and nine
months. The sorrowing family have
the sincere sympathy of their many
friends.
Gust Remele wears his hat on one
side. All on account of a little daugh
ter that arrived at his house last week
John Randall and wife, of Huron,
spent several days of last week in the
city visiting the former's parents.
Dr. J. W. B. Wellcome and son Jake
returned fiom St. Louis last Wednes
day.
Miss Ernestine Schuelke has moved
her millinery establishment from the
Bans building to the store building of
T. J. Dim, where she can now be found
with a full line of spring and summer
goods,
Mr. Levi returned Inst Sunday from
St. Louis, where he has been spending
some months for the benefit of his
health. He is not much improved how
ever.
Peter Madesou has had his head way
up since Saturday A little girl arrived
in bis home ou that day and calls her
self Miss Madeson.
Wqi Giundmejer took eight horses
to Hew Uim ou Saturday tor Jacob
Klossner. From there they will be tak
en to Brownstown on the Milwaukee
road and shipped to South Dakota

of their friends, Saturday evening. A
pleasant evening was spent by all pre
sent.
H. Bendixen did business at Sleepy
Eye on Tuesday.
Miss Evelyn Trantman, of Sleepy
Eye, visited with the Misses Roths dur
ing the week.
The Sons of Veterans will meet at
Roberts Hall next Saturday evening
An institute for the teachers of-Brown
County will be held here during the
week, commencing April 14th.
Joe Hirscher, of Shakopee, is the
guest of John Roth.
George and Albert Schmitz, of Essig,
spent a few hours with friends at this
place Wednesday afternoon.
H. Mueller came up from New Ulm
last Monday to work in the Springfield
Roller Mill.
Geo. Fox has sold bis farm and per
sonal property in Stately and will move
to Springfield.
The Williams Family gave an enter
tainment at Robert's hall on Thur»dav
evening. The audience was a small'

tained a party of friends at their borne

Wm. Mellenthin, of Sleepy Eve, is

G. W. Schlottman is having plans I
drawn for a fine dwelling, to be erected
in the spring.
Courtland is large enough to support
a shoemaker if he is a rustler. Why is
it that borne of those, who handle the
awl and last, don't think of this? A
jewelry store and barbershop would al
so be nice additions to the village.
J. FT. Doty returned from Chicago
Wednesday.
Mr. Baige, of the bt Peter Tribune,
called on the friends of that paper on
Thursday.
G. W. Schlottman ill orjen up a

STATE TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
An institute for the Teachers of
BROWN COUNTY
will be held at
SPRINGFIELD
Duung the week commencing
Monday, April 14th 1890, at 2 o'clock
M.
The Stale will pro\ ide efficient in
stiuctors. who will take great gpains to
make the instruction pointed and jn the
highest degree practical, including
management ot school, grading and
methods of teaching the common school
branches. The evenings will be occu
pied by lecturers, literary exercises and
social entertainment-, and everything
possible will be done to make the week
a pleasant and profitable one for all.
The teacheis ot this county and all
persons wishing to become such are le
pected to lespond promptly to their
duty and be present at the opening on
Monday afternoon. I hey may make
notes of the difficulties thev meet in the
coarse of their teaching, ihe remedies
to which will be discussed by instruct
ors as well as by expei ienced teachers.
Schools can be legally closed during
Institute week and school trustees are
solicited to give the teachers of their
respective districts all opportunity to
attend the Institute.
Teachers are requested to give time
ly notice to this office, of their intention
to be present, thdt board and lodging
for all may be provided at the lowest
