The President and tho different ( lovernora have issued their rospee tive proclamations designating next Thursday, the 30th, as a day of Thanksgiving. The day will be jiret ty generally observed. Let us all be as thankful as we can for the many blessings we are enjoying, Upon receipt of the government ginners report Tuesday, which ad vanced the price of cotton futures 100 points in sky-rocket fashion, the following message was wired to Mr. Price by a number of Greenwood gentlemen : "Theodore Price, New York--We welcome you to our ranks. Remem ber the ides of 1900. "GrKKNWOOD Bril.;-." The presentation of "The Clans man" was witnessed by the largest exclusive audience of white people that has over assembled at the Greenwood Opera House, on Tues day evening last. All the parts of this new and popular play were! faultlessly executed, and the large audience evidenced its approval by storms of applause from start to finish. ' A great deal of blow and bluster is indulged in by some of the State papers about their respective towns and cities being the best cotton mar kete, etc. Some of them even have the audacity to claim superiority ov er Greenwood 1 gives us little concern, inasmuch as Greenwood is known all over the This balderdash whole country as being the second! largest cotton market in Mississippi, The efforts of some newspapers to make people believe their towns ranks with Greenwood as a cotton market in any respect are ridiculous and disgusting to say the least of it. The report was smaller than most anybody expected and the market advanced over 100 points with light ning rapidity. The crop cannot ex ceed 10,000,(XX) bales this year, and if the producers will only stand pat they can easily command 15 cents a pound for the remainder of the crop. The Commonwealth hopes they will take advantage of their opportunity and force the spinners to pay every cent the staple is really worth. A large number of new subscrib ers have been enrolled by The Com monwealth during the past few weeks. They are among the very best class of pleople, as are all of our subscribers, and we appreciate having them as patrons. In fact, there is not a more reliable, substan tial list of subscribers on the books of any newspaper in Mississippi than The Commonwealth proudly boasts of. Let every cotton producer in Le flore county pay 3 cents per bale on the cotton he'produces to the South ern Cotton Growers Association, and thereby aid in perfecting a more thorough organization. The Asso ciation has been of vast benefit in upholding the price of cotton and the planters cannot make a better investment than to contribute 3 cents per bale to the great work the Association is doing.
