Thousands of Detroit's citizens never dreamed that the Roman Catholic machine was completely in control of their politics and their public schools. Other thou sands knew that things were not as they should be, but they had never been able to ascertain what was wrong, so thoroughly does this alien, un-American, undemo cratic clen cover its tracks and destroy the visible evi dence of its intrigue. A reading of the first page story of this Issue of The Menace will convince any man that the people of Detroit have not called a halt too early. That they have called a halt is evidenced by the fact that they are aroused as they have never been aroused before and are now organizing for the spring elections, at which time they plan to dislodge the public schools from the hands of their sworn enemies, the followers of the pope of Rome. The Menace takes pride in the fact, too, that it is given credit for this awakening. The patriots of Detroit have distributed The Menace liberally among their fel lowmen and this, together with our enormous subscrip tion list in that city, has brought the people to their senses and to a realization of the danger confronting them on every hand. The revelations in this issue concerning the papal Izing of the public schools of Detroit shows that pretty soon the work we have Just done would ere long have been impossible, for the very good reason that within another generation the city would have been hopelessly In the hands of papal subjects and all avenues of in formation leading to the great masses of the people would, in all likelihood, have been closed forever. We speak with knowledge and absolute sincerity when we say that the same, and even worse, conditions than prevail in Detroit prevail In practically every large dty in the nation I The writer had a letter last week from a patriotic publisher In one of the best cities in thia country In which he stated that neither The Menace tier any other patriotif-publication could be sold on the streets, and that it would be dangerous for a man to be on the streets with copies of NEW ADDITIONS TO THE MENACE FAMILY Ttjx Cm taumnt tadoaed, S . 8end THE MENACE to the Mowing names: Writa Raaaaa Plaanry WTth PaaMft-OO NOT NAME Date. ... . ..... ..... ...... ,V. . CONGRESS HAS DISTIN GUISHED ITSELF BY THE EN ACTMENT OF THE FIRST PRO VISION FOR PREPAREDNESS AGAINST THE MOST DANGER OUS FOE OF THIS COUNTRY AND AMERICAN CIVILIZATION. Some headway may now be made toward educating and Americanizing the millions already, imported by or ganized political Romanism and greedy employers of labor. May the good work go on. While the pope's noisy New Orleans organ, and other mouthpieces of pop ery, are shrieking themselves hoarse at the state of Florida, that common wealth has again offended the ag grieved papists by granting munici pal suffrage to women in four Florida towns. The world does move in spite of snarling bishops. Quite appropriate, since this Is the attitude of Rome toward everything distinctively American, Congress has finally mustered the courage to pass the Immigration bill, with literacy test, over President Wil son's veto. Papists have already de clared their intention to have the new immigration law set aside by the su preme court, and It remains to be seen whether that tribunal has been suffi ciently Romanised to further delay the will of the people. Every patriot within the radius ot greater Boston should arrange to hear this distinguished lawyer and author, who during the past year has made a personal study of Rome's entrench ment in our national capital. Nor is this all, each patriot should arrange to take at least one una wakened Prot estant with him to attend this lecture. In so doing the New Reformation movement will receive new Impetus in New England an impetus somewhat similar to that which has already marked it in Detroit and Chicago and wherever monster meetings have been held in this mighty campaign which promises to awaken sleeping rrotes tantism and arouse the conscience of the nation as it has not been aroused in fifty years. The above clinDinir from the Krin&ai City Star for February 3, 1917, seem ingly, at least, records a partial if not total awakening to the menace con fronting the most necessary of all truly American institutions in Brook lyn, N. Y. This condition, however, is not con fined to Brooklyn alone, nor does the phrasing ""Canadian, English, French, and German" tell the whole story. It is perfectly sate to assume that 99 out of every 100 of these Canadian, French, English and German teachers are likewise Catholics, placed in posi tions by the Roman hierarchy in a manner diffenne very little if any from the way the same result has been obtained in Detroit, as described in this issue. Is it not sufficiently hazardous to place a so-called citizen-Romanist in such positions without aggravating the case by placing a Romanist in charge of our children who makes no pretentions at citizenship? Catholic teachers in our nubile schools who are not pretending citi zenshipon the face of thines owe allegiance to the fatherland, to say nothing of the "first allegiance" they owe and pay to the papal sovereignty: which places alleziance to America and American ideals in rank for third consideration. Truly, we. as a neoule. shall in the last analysis be unworthy of the heri tage so dearly purchased by the fathers unless we arouse from our lethargy and defend as well as seek to advance the public schools, instead of permitting the minions of a foreign potentate to undermine, the entire sys tem. When we have successfully elimin ated all subjects of foreign interests, such as kings, popes and czars, from positions of trust in our public schools, then it will not be unwise to direct our attention to the parochial school; for if we find so much that is foreign in our public school, what must conditions be in these schools which were reared to compete with and supplant the public school? Erected in the interest of a foreigft sovereign who lays claim to rule the world by divine right, surely the parochial school must be as entirely foreien to American ideals in pnnci pie, teachings, and teachers, as is the most un-American or all organiza tions, the Roman Catholic church, from whence it sprung. This bill is expected to pass and become a law, though it will encounter all the opposition papist politicians can organize, Just as the Bowman Bill did. Information from Salem is to the effect that Rome mustered all its un holy forces at Salem in a supreme effort to defeat the Bowman law; but, although several who should have sup ported it were too weak to withstand papist pressure, overwhelming public sentiment was victorious. It is to be hoped that the great state of Oregon may consistently continue in its progressive course; and provide promptly for the establishment and maintenance cf all institutions needed for the correction of delinquents. It is beneath the dimity of any common wealth to farm out its wards of an class to other interests and private profit-makers. - FORD AUTOMOBILE PLANT HONEYCOMBED WITH SUB JECTS OF THE POPE Papists and Jesuits Shrewdly Con trol the Situation in Great In dustrial Plant in Spite of the Ousting of Couzens The greatest employment industry in Detroit is the Ford Automobile works. Under Mr. Ford's beneficent rule it has become the mecca for thou sands of foreien-born. along with the hundreds of American born who are fortunate enough to be on its payroll Necessarily, the head of such a great industry must delegate the details of its management to sub-heads; and necessarily, thousands of things will occur incidental to the business that the head will not know. Consequent ly we cannot condemn Mr. Ford per sonally for what subordinates do un known to him. The great trouble with Mr. Ford is the same one that besets all great men. They surround themselves with a wall of seclusion that makes it im possible for the public or its repre sentatives to reach them. It is just as difficult to secure an audience with Henry Ford or reach him through the mails, as it is to reach President Wil son. His secretaries do all the censor ing and consequently, much of the bUUl&lIlC.. This condition is particularly un fortunate when the man is a public philanthropist and benefactor. The Lord has probably sent Mr. Ford many messages through humble in struments that never reached him. We trust this one belongs to that class but, will reach him. When Mr. James Couzens was manager rf the Ford plant, it was pretty thoroughly Ro manized. In the reorganization fol lowing Mr. Couzens' retirement, an effort was made to counteract this error at the behest of patriotic cit izens but the house-cleaning ended al most where it began ; the power of se lection and promotion still rests large ly with Rome. There are a number of American-born Protestants in the plant and some loyal patriots, but safety compels quietness. Strong ef forts have been made to oust those who dared speak their convictions; doubtless many lost their positions be cause of loyalty to American princi ples. The claim has lately been made that there is no longer favoritism in selection, so the writer tried it out and got first hand information. Ap plication was made in good faith and in the proper manner. Reference was given to heads higher up that knew of our Ford-Peace propaganda press work. In due time an acknowledgement was received. Later an investigator called to make a personal report A good impression was made and words favorable were spoken until the gen tleman saw a Detroit reform news paper lying on the floor. .He at once changed the subect and asked about the paper, bringing out the fact that the' applicant wrote for that paper. As soon as he learned of this, he lost all interest in the case, made a few notes on his card and rising to go, said in substance, "Of course, you may not be called. Investigation does not nec essarily mean employment Don't be disappointed if you do not hear fur ther." The writer knew the judgment was final as well as did the investiga tor.. Loyalty to Rome was greater to this man than loyalty to Ford. But these business conditions are only minor issues. If Mr. Ford chose to employ only Roman Catholics that would be his privilege. It is the polit ical issue that interests us, such as transforming the subjects of the for eien napal sovereignty into voting cit izens of the U. S. by hothouse or forced growth methods. To accomplish this end, so much desired by the priests and Irish Catholic politicians,-they have established schools of parrot-like instruction, that will enable the igno rant foreigner to pass a political ex amination before the Rome "controlled political judge or board that examines him. In this manner, thousands of foreigners who cannot read or write the English language; who know nothinff of our nrincinlea of srovern ment or national needs, and who are , out of all harmony and sympathy wiu Amerlcan freedom as voiced 'in our' free schools, free press or f re sneech, j are given equal franchise with the in-1 telligent and patriotic native-born. Tha lowest of these can use his bal lot at the behest of the ward boss and kill the vote of the greatest and best man in America even that of Mr. Ford himself so low have we fallen as a nation. . ' These men may be (rood as work men for Mr. Ford but they are not good as voting citizens for the United tatee. They are the victims of su- Serstltion and greed; a good share of lelr wages must go to the priest er the manv demands of tha so-called church. If they fail to reverence,' obey and pay, the chances are they will soon lose their Job and be threatened with the torments of purgatory In definitely. These are the kind of peo ple that send their children to paid parochial schools and thus rob, them of the blessings of an American FREE school education. Tbey fear the priest and they fear purgatory; and they always vote as they are told We are quite sure if Mr. Ford thor oughtly -understood the situation, his plant would no longer be so accommodating to these tnade-to-order, hurry up, subjects of Rome citizens. The native-born male has to wait 21 years before casting a vote, and the most intelligent females are Just securing the ballot in . some places, and it was Roman Catholic politics that held them back so long. But the ignorant Roman Catholic for eignernone other mind you gets in his little vote at from one to five yean according to local conditions. Non Catholic nations do not enjoy this lux ury; the Japanese, Chinese, East In dian, Egyptian, etc., etc., for instance. Nine times out of ten it is the Ro man Catholic foreigner that gets the job and vote. The men who are at the head of this movement in the Ford plant, as else where, are generally professedly Prot estant and patriotic; they really think they are doing their country a good service, but to the instructed It "is simply a case of Jesuits pulling the string and the little Protestant Jacks doing the dancing. If Rome did the work in the open, the country would soon be up in arms and they know it; there are none so wise with the wis dom of Satan as the Jesuits, and none so foolish as Cur blind friends who permit such conditions without pro test All the great prison and semi-prison institutions of Rome in Detroit which are run as religious houses ana church benefactions were largely built and are largely supported by so-called Protestants. Jesuitical deceit and fear of K. of C. ruffianism draw thera into the net Political Detroit and Business Detroit are absolutely at the mercy of Jesuitical Rome. It is for permitting his great plant to-be used as a school and refuge to give Rome more votes and power in Detroit, that we take issue with Mr. ' Ford. Rome wants just three things: money, power and to be let alone. Every na tion that has gone down under Roman Catholic dominion testifies to these attributes of the papacy.
