MARSHALL ' REPUBLICAN. MARSHALL REPUBLICAN. Cntcred tit the I'oatolllcc in Murxlmll, Mo., n xeeonil-elus mutter. TKUMS: l.00 lKlt YF.AK IN ADVANCE. PERCY H. VAN DYKE, Editor. The fnct that the Republican party lias this year nominated n great lender ami jxtpttlnr hero for vice-president, instead of following an old custom of picking n nominee because of his barret or in deference to some desired state, his name would prove influential in car rying, has been the sou tee of much miscon struction and false prophecy by the party's opponents. The enthusiastic following, which Roosevelt received in the national convention nnd the unanimity of .sentiment behind him nsa vice presidential nominee, have been taken up and pointed to as evidence of weakness UKn the part of McKinley in the eyes of his party. Hut every county nnd state conven tion of the whole country has endorsed the administration and has demanded the renom iuation of the tried and proven McKinley. He was unanimously the choice of his party, which stands squarely upon his record and again asks the support of the nation. With no contest, no opposition, party opinion of one mind in its desire to retain at the helm this same trusted McKinley, surely it is no wonder that all excitement and interest should wane from this long forgone conclusion and turn to the contest for the vice-presidential nomina tion, about which there was no certainty. Nor is it any less strange, that the mention of a very prominent statesman, great both in laurels of peace nnd war, for this honor, should arouse the enthusiasm of the convention, car rying from what seemed formidable men, the very states Um)ii which they trusted for sup port. All went down before the hero of San Juan, just as breezes become lost in a gale. As an idol of the masses, he leeni::e the spon taneous choice of the delegates; ns n repre sentative of no section, but ns a broad minded American, he became (he favorite of both Hast nnd West. Under such conditions, and with military glory attached to his unuie ns n hero of the Spanish-Ameticnu war, honor and credit bestowed upon him as the able, consci enciotis nnd fearless executive of a great state, who dared raise his hand against corporations and protect the interests of the people, Roose velt's tremendous popularity, contrary to his expressed wishes, nominated him for vice president by acclamation. Hut the enemies ol Roosevelt rejoice to see him shelved in the vice presidency, as they term it. While this office has been considered n jwilitical coffin, the facts which make it so, are not present in this instance. The nominee wns not chosen because of his barrel, or that he hailed from New York, but for better rea sons, found in the man Roosevelt. Teddy is not a "dead one." The Republican party has better things in store for this loyal New York son than the vice-presidency. It, is left for It i it to shatter the false theory thnt a vice piesiilent mny not succeed to the presidency. TROTECTION OF AMERICANS. The opposition in opposing the president's course in China at this crisis, is wading into very deep witter. The olicy ol picking at and trying to undermine every move of the administration in its foreign dealings tins In come such n constant habit, that the course of opposition is a natural one. Hut Americans, regardless of party ties, have only one view ns to the government's duty to its citieus in a foreign country. We I elicve and declare it to be, the protection of their lives nnd procrty, first in demands upon that government in whose boundaries they reside, nnd if not accomplished thus, by assuring them the protection of our own nrms. This country has clearly avoided nny foreign alliance, except in so much ns was necessary to co-operate with other powers in the protec tion of all foreigners. Russian influence has not been discriminated against in favor of Hritish, and our national dignity has been preserved, by maintenance of the rights of our citizens and a position df neutrality as re gards any Kuropeau dissensions. Some of Missouri's newspaiers have at tempted to justify the election of l'helps on the grounds that the Republicans do such things at every election. Such argument emanates from a half Republican brain, Index. Hardly, don't disclaim your Brother Pln-lps, the Handy Man, after honoring him as a dele gate at large. The Democratic party has a fee simple title to Phelps and he in turn has a No. i claim on the Democratic party of Mis souri. Why don't the Marshall papers, if they really place credence in their own prophecies of Hryan's election, make the offer of the Sal isbury Democrat to send their paper for one year for $1.00 payable when Hrynn is elected. It is :i sure thing that they could add to their subscription books, the names ol all Rcpubl cans and a large number of Democrats, who would be willing to run n slight risk of this chn meter. l'helps wns not lacking in Saline county supMrt, five of whose votes were cast for him. This county's further lndor.-.cnient of l'helps and his party may be expected this November, but not by all its voers. The majority party has become too open in its fos tering of corporate interests nnd honoring of professional lobbyists to reckon either upon n full or enthusiastic party vote. Illinois Democracy gave 16 to 1 n set back, from which it can only recover by Mr. Bry an's personal influence exerted umiii the trend of party opinion. Hut Hryau is faithful in his advocacy of silver, and tittle doubt remains but what the Chicago platform position tixn free silver will ngaiu he reaffirmed ns Demo cratic doctrine. Why is it Democracv appears to think that Hill if nominated for vice-president would carry New York for Hrynn, when his defeat for governor of thnt state, the last time he was before the people, in iSo.j, was one of the most overwhelming ever accorded by the ! ers of the Ktupirc state? Alfred Henry Lewis, .editor of the Verdict of New York, holds out n "will o' the wisp" hoM. to Hryan's followers in promising New York to the Nebrasknu, and for this kindness, n Western ndmiter calls him one of "the calmest nnd most dispassionate of writers." Russia recently secured a loan from New York capitalists, paying 4 percent interest, but the InmkIs of this government were floated at nearly half this figure, which does not go to .strengthen the claims of the anti-expansionists, who depict our national future ns dark. Democrati: plipers-iiiallgu Roosevelt every way imaginable nnd in the next breath laud him as McKiuley's stipiior and a truly great partisan. They never show nny dispo sition to stop and ponder iimii their own in consistency and fickle reasoning. The New York Sun says the propir wnv to get an idea of what the Democratic patty of Missouri has sunk to, is to recall the fact thnt Lou Stephens has just received its endorse ment by being elected a dclegatc-nt-lnrgc to the national convention. The Democrats should nominate Towne or Hill, a silver Republican or gold Democrat, for vice-president. The party is too small ns at present constituted to wilfully sacrifice a leader of good standing in the party for the nomination. National conventions are often held in states nnd cities to influence the election in those sections. Perhaps Hrynn is to be nominated in Kansas City, in order that Missouri mny be numbered among his faithful. The Kansas City convention should be post poned, to allow the party time to formulate n plank, opposing the administration's position in protecting American citizens in China.
