He and Mrs. Burton lei ton the Union Pac ific train at 1 p. m. today. Tho train was an hour late, aud during this time probably 100 persons called to bid tlicm gooddy. Tlicre was no dem onstration, neither were there tears. Mr. Burton interest ed and amused the meu with political iucidcuts, aud Mrs. Burton was the center of a group of women. When they entered the Pullman car there wore 150 people present. A stranger would have conclud ed that prominent people were leaving for a long pleasure journey. Mrs. Burton has always held the friendship of every one here, and the manner iu which she and Mr. Burton havo borne their trouble has wou admiration. Mr. Burton has.spokeu iu terms of high- eat appreciation of the loyalty of frlcuds throughout the country aud the treatment of his home people. People here do not condone Mr. Burton's wrongdoings, but owing to the belief that others have been guilty of equally grave notions ami the fact that four supreme court judges said he watf uot guilty, thoy think there was malice iu his prosecution. Abilene now sees Mr. Burton mure as the plain man than as the uiti 7,ou or neighbor and friend of a quarter of a century. Men who have opposed him politic ally for years now speak kind ly of him. There aro things iu his personality that the people likOj aud when lie re turns Abilcuq will extend a friendly hand. L Voters of Miaeouri 4 Cape Girardeau, Oct. 23, 1906.
