What the Association Hire

THE POOR MANS SCHOOL
Every Letter 800 This Year
Is Testimony of Dem
ocratic Spirit
t More than 300 letters have been yet
ceiyed at the office of the Y M C i
In the last few weeks Inquiries for
student employment at the University
of Missouri They represent a wide
range of territory Some are from th6
extreme East some from the Pacific
coast and some from foreign countries
I have read said John S Moore
general secretary of the Y M C A in
his office last night all of those let
ters and every one is a testimony of
the democratic spirit of the University
Three -hundred of them dropping in
here from more than half of the states
of the Union prove to me that the Uni
versity of Missouri is without doutft
a poor mans school I have heard that
before Perhaps you have heard iL j
felt it when I came here a year ago
but now I know It
Mr Moore was asked about the let
ters -
They come to us he said be-
cause we are maintaining in connec
tion with our work an employment bu
reau and we invite inquiries of this
sort
He reached Into a filing case
brought out a large letter file
All Ask for Work
and
Now well look at this one and
he drew a long sheet from the ton
This is a sample they all read about
alike
The letter started something like
this I understand that at the Uni
versity of Missouri it is possible for
students to earn a part or all of their
expenses while in school Three hun
dred men wrote that way -
We have placed said Mr Moore
about 150 students in positions Wje
answer these letters in this way
Bring enough money for your - ex
penses of the first two or three months
and well try We cant promise5 you
definitely That brings them
The Y M C A has another depart
ment for the convenience of students
and particularly new students This
department has no name but through
it the Y M C A acting it mightbe
said as a middle man brings the
student and the boarding house and
rooming house people in touch with
one another It is a convenient place
for each
Two or three weeks before the
opening of school said the Secretary
our boys- visited every rooming house
in the city and inspected the rooms
that Is they looked at the rooms so
we might know just what they were
That gave us something more than a
lis it gave us a description of every
room that was for rent in the city
When the men came in this fall and
had no place to go the first night or so
we kept them right here in the build
ing We used about twenty cots in
that way fhis week
To Do Larger Work
Mr Moore talked further aboutijthe
work of tho Y M C A
Oh he said these things we liave
spoken of here are only incidents of
the work And still I could mention
more things of this sort The Y It C
A is filling a great want
He walked out into corrldona
You can see it here Just watcnUhe
door a minute and you areimpressed
by this constant coming and going of
men They are here every minute of
the day They like to come They
come and then they come back They
seek association The Y M C A
makes it possible for them to have as
sociation of the right sort Nearly 200
men have walked up to the counter
this week and on their first visit to
the building taken out memberships
We have an increased enrollment over
that of last year We have added to
our equipment and it is about com
plete We are in a way to do a larger
work I believe we will do It dont
you
