NOW OWNS LOCAL SERVICE
Columbia's newest business woman
is -Miss Pauline Hanes, who has taken
over the ownership and management
of the Meyer Taxicab Company Miss
Hanes has purchased from Ira T. G.
Stone the two cars sold by the taicab
company at public auction last week
and bought by Mr. Srone. She plans
to add one other automobile to the
company's rolling stock.
"The business will be conducted
along the same plans as those of the
former owners," said Miss Hanes to
day. "We shall use only large cars."
MIs Hanes before coming to Co
lumbia lhed at Pittsfield, 111. She has
been a resident cf this city the last
eight years. For five years she was
bookkeeper and cashier for the Sjkes
& Ilroadhead Clothing Company. The
last ear she has been stenographer
for the directors and officers of the
Central Hank.

The new taxicab company will be
known as the 4111 Taxicab Company.
Ilildc College Plans Summer e.ion.
The Hiblo College of Missouri will
offer for the first time a course in
the Summer Session. Two courses
will be offered: One will be Christian
Ethics, two hours, which is credit
ed in the I'niversity; the other is de
signed as an introduction to the New
Testament. Prof. W. C. Gibbs will be
in charge.
N'elili City Lodire Team Will Play Co
lumbia at Contention.
The Columbia Elks' challenge for a
baseball game with any other Elk
team of the state at the Elks' State
Convention, which is to be held at
Moberly June 20, 21 and 22, has been
accepted by the Elks of Webb City.
The game will be played in Moberly
on the afternoon of June 21.
W. P. Hudson, local manager, said
jesterday the Columbia Elks were
trying to get the Wabash to run a
special to Moberly the morning of
June 21. He said that the Webb City
Elks hae one of the best amateur
teams in the state. George Taylor will
pitch and Harry Insing will do the
receding for the Columbia Elks.

teachers to' help him run the schools
of MaryUlle, of which he has been
elected superintendent for the coming
j ear. He was principal at Stanberry

Centralia Man Kuns for Slate Hepre

Richard Cook of Centralia has again
announced his candidacy for state rep
resentative. .Mr. Cook was a close sec
ond to William H. Sapp of Columbia
in" the 1914 election, polling- 1,603
otes to 1,680 for Mr. Sapp.
Columbia's large majority for Mr.
Sapp was responsible for his election.
Mr. Cook having carried Centralia,
Hallsville, Sturgeon and other small
er precincts.
Cook was defeated for represent
ative in 1910 and in 1912 by F. G. Har
ris, who in 1914 was elected state
senator.
California Has Athletic Tap Day.
The Unhersity of California at
Ilerkley held a tag day to raise $1,
100 to complete the fund of $3,000
needed to pay the expenses of the
track team to the meet at Harvard and
the Western Conference meet at Chi
cago. "Keep California on the Map".

on what the United States should do
to Increase her military power. Euro
pean armies and European methods

military preparedness.
The United States can learn a lei-
son on the subject of preparedness
from the little country of Chile la
South America, howeier, according to
Washington T. Diaz, student in the
College of Agriculture. Diaz comes
(from Santiago, Chile, and has also
I traveled extensively in Europe.
j "At the age of nineteen years every
man in Chile has to enter the army for
one full year of training." said Mr.
Diaz. Nothing outside of physical ina
bility or the dependence cf a widowed
mother or a very poor family on him
for support will excuse a male citizen
from this requirement; in most cases
he will have to serve his time later,
even under these conditions.

According to Mr. Diaz, the idea that
the army and navy of his country and
other South American contries are
controlled by German officers is false.
"We have gained many valuable iioints
in military tactics and training from
the Germans, but they do not control
our forces In any way," said the Chil
ean.
Diaz will remain at the Unhersity
of Missuri for two more years. He will
then return to Chile and put what he
has learned in the College of Agricul
ture to the practical test on his large
farm.
Drher Exceeds Speed Limit.
John Niles, a drher for the Bowser
Taxicab Company, pleaded guilty of
exceeding the speed limit and was
fined $10.73 in iiolice court xesterday
morning.
