WASHINGTON Mar 30 Posters
proclaiming the Third Liberty Loan
In striking phrases and colorful de
signsnine million of them In more
than a dozen styles arc now being
distributed to every city and hamlet
of the United States
They are the silent sales agents of
the bonds and their preparation has
taken months of planning and careful
choosing Hardly had the Second
Liberty Loan campaign closed before
the countrys foremost artists and de
signers were Invited to go to work on
posters for the third loan
The result Is a collection of striking
posters considered artistically and
psychologically better than any yet
attempted in the two previous loan
drives Soon they will be familiar
sights in store windows on bill
boards arid all public places
In addition five million window
stickers 50000000 poster stamps and
16000000 badges have been ordered
and will bo ready for the opening day
of the campaign
Some of the designers of the Liberty
Loan posters are Howard Chandler
Christy Joseph Pennell J C Leyen
decker Sydney Riesenberg Herbert
Paus Henry Raleigh and Sydney S
Stern All contributed their work
without pay and scores of other
artists submitted designs which were
reluctantly rejected
Many Striking Designs
One of the most striking posters
that of Joseph Pennell the Phila
delphia marine artist portrays a great
battleship alongside wharves bustling
with war time activity motor trucks
swinging cranes and smoking stacks
with airplanes overhead It is exe
cuted In etching style and the title
subscribed is Provide the Sinews
of War Buy Liberty Bonds
Howard Chandler Christy con
tributed a stirring design A slim
young modernized goddess of liberty
waves aloft an American banner
and with outstretched arm points
to a file of soldiers marching past
Fight or Buy Bonds is the title
A poster which will arrest instant
attention shows a steel helmeted
American soldier springing from a
trench and bearing a billowing

Harold Pollen Sentenced to Separation
From His Svteetheart
According to the jurys verdict in a
mock trial held by the Current Events
Club at the Columbia High School
Tuesday afternoon Harold Pollen the
defendant is to endure six weeks
separation from his sweetheart and
is not to be allowed to sit on the
Christian College Wall
Pollock was convicted of running
over Miss Sadie Stean and Miss Jewell
Hughes The lawyer for the defence In
troduced several witnesses who testi
fied that the accused was of good char
acter Miss Stean and Miss Hughes ap
peared in court wearing bandages as
a result of the accident They testi
fied that when Pollock approached
he was lost in deep though When
he ran over them he repeatedly mur
mured the name of his sweetheart
they said
The Jury rendered a verdict of guil
ty Those serving as jurors were

Story of American
Invention -

at Cambrai Conserve
Lives of Soldiers
And the worm turned from a harm
less farm tractor Into the tank the
fighting machine most dreaded by the
Germans It was the caterpillar which
gave Benjamin Holt of California
the idea for a tractor which could pass
over rough ground and through mar
shes and deep sand And it was the
ability to do this which caused the
British to introduce it into warfare
The tanks are movable forts which
demolish barbed wire entanglements
go over shell holes and trenches go
j through brick walls and smash down
trees They do their best work when
going at the rate of only two and one
half miles an hour and their maxi
mum speed is only four These lum
bering monsters are 23 feet long 9
feet wide 8 feet high and weigh about
25000 pounds with the heavy armor
plate which covers them They are
equipped with field guns which are
fired as they approach the enemy
Machine gun bullets three inch shells
and rifle bullets have no effect on the
armor of the tanks It is only the
heavy artillery which can stop them
and this is ineffective if the tank gets
close enough because the big guns
cannot be depressed so as to make a
square hit
Tanks have no wheels but crawl on
corrugated belts Each side is under
independent control so that the ma
chine can be turned around in its own
length The center of gravity is far
back and not more than a foot and a
half above the ground
Tractors were used as trucks early
in the war but it was not until the
battle of the Somme that they were
used as tanks In the big British
drive before Cambrai the tanks drove

value In sparing the lives of men and
conserving ammunition Tanks are
used after the artillery tiring to
clear the way for the attack of the in
fantry They clear the way so well
that the infantry suffers but slight
loss
While the armored brother is fight
ing in France the caterpillar tractor
at home is reclaiming thousands of
acres of marsh land which otherwise
would always remain useless And
all the rest of the forty or fifty types
of tractors are working hard to In
crease crop production
Tractors have been used more in
Kansas and Iowa and other states of
level surface than in Missouri says
E W Lehmann professor of farm
machinery But there are between
1800 and 2000 tractors In this state
Many are being sent to France to re
place man power in producing crops
Between 1500 and 2000 will go this
year and tractor companies are send
ing experts to teach the use of them
Tractors were first used on the
northwestern wheat fields and often
pulled as many as eighteen plows The
engine in these tractors was very hard
to crank and the outfit was unwieldy
for the average farmer But they have
been gradually improved and reduced
in size until now they ordinarily have
just three plows
The tractor is coming into greater
use says Professor Lehmann on ac
count of the shortage of farm labor
Tractors can do three times as much
work as a team ot horses
