Henry Watterson says "that Gui

isn't saying much for Guiteau. The
sanity of the editor of the Courier

Air. itasclnut, ah excuse us, we
should have said Haseltine, intro

one day. Go up head Mr. Hasel
tine. That's more hills than Thom

deliberative body in the whole course
f a life spent in the public service.
lieneral loseph n.. lonnston is
just about as unfortul.- in his state
ments in reference to ex-President
Davis' taking, and not accounting j
for the Confederate gold, on hand
at the time of the collapse, as he was
in his campaigns in the late war.
We think the friends of that eminent
eabbler had better muzzle him.
General Joseph E. Johnston kick
ed fearfully when General R. E.
Lee was placed in command over
him by ex-President Davis. The
a
subsequent military exploits of Gen'.
Lee and Johnston during the late
war illustrates the good judgement
of the ex-President. Gen. Lee, al-
most without an equal in the annals
of history, counting his victories by
the score, while Gen. Johnston
never won a battle.
A special to
Times of Dec.
the Kansas City
27, from Wichita,
Kan., savs: Captain D. L. Payne
arrived here fresh from Oklahome.
He reports every Uiing in the terri
tory as booming, and a large number
of people in the territory, concen-
trating upon the ceded lands at an J
early day. He says that the report
that a number ot boomers have been
ejected from the territory by Federal
authorities is entirely absurd. He is
confident of the success of tne Okla-
a . 1 HI
noma proiect, ana win return in a
ew days to Oklahoma.
It is thought by some that ex-Sena
tor Conkling will be a candidate for
governor of the great State of New
York at the next election in that
State, which takes place next fall.
The ex-Senator has never been
before the people of that State, we
believe, for any State office, and it
mav be that he conceives that as the
head of the State ticket in the next
canvass an opportunity will be af
forded mm to work' revenge on
some aspiring Half Breed, who, in
the recent past put the knife to the
ex-Senator. In this venture he
would have the support and backing
of President Arthur, we believe, and
Cornell, the present incumbent,
however much he might desire to
head the Republican forces, would
be ordered to take aback scat.
The opinion prevails in Washing-
ton that the bill pending in the S;n-
ate creating a commission to revisen
the present tariff laws will meet with J
decided opposition in the House.
The fate of the measure in the Sen- J
ate is very doubtful. The tariff
question viewed in the light of the
varied and conflicting interests ot the
whole country will make, we antici
pate, bed-fellows of men and unite
sections of our country which hither
to have been widely apart. In our
humble judgment it is not improba-
Me that there are men in Congress
from the South, where the manufac
turing interest is beginning to receive
some attention, and capital is being
daily invested in that interest, who
will oppose a revision of the preset
tariff . system, looking only to a sys
tem for raising revenue, while eas
tern members will stand as a unit
against any plan for revenue only.
The northwestern members, it is said,
with a very tew exceptions, are in
favor of a commission to revise, and
so the tariff question is again brought
mlo the political arena, anil will
doutless be the main issue in the
Presidential canvass in 1SS4.

Precisely at 8 1-2 o'clock p. M. , on
Thursday evening wc closed the door
of our sanctum behind us and pro
ceeded to the Ohio street M. E
church. Arriving at the church door
we met with a most cordial welcome
reception by Mr. II. B. Robinson
and J. N. Gipson, who conducted us
to an eligible seat, from which we
could at a glance take in the occa
sion. Quite a number of ladies and
emen had by this time assem
bled, who indulged themselves in a
good old fashioned chat that remind
ed us of the holiday days of our boy
hood, when that delicious piece of
music was rendered by Mr. Johnson,
Mr. Park, Mr. Mastic and Mr. N
13. .McFarland in a most exquisite
manner, which was succeeded by the
rendition of that rattling soul-stirring,
heart-filling piece 'in the morning's
bright light' by the same gentlemen
and brought down the house. Sup-
per was then announced and we were
escorted to a seat at the table by Mr.
Oipson, who taking advantage of
our known weakness, and placed us
near a large fat turkey, served up in
style. The supper beggars descrip-
tion. 1 he table was ladened m rreat
variety and profusion with the
choicest viands in the land, well
cooked, and now we come to speak
of something that touches a tender
chord Lorena, that English plum
pudding. Shall I ever forget it?
Not much we won't. Long years
have fallen into eternities' lap since
this delicacy has greeted the local's
appetite. It was superb. Supper
being served, the rest of the evening
was devoted to music and promena
ding. The surveying party for the L. &
A. branch camped Thursday night
on Grand river near Altona, prepar
ed to come south, and we may ex
pect them iii our city very soon, ami
our people will, we feel assurred, ex
tend to the party all the courtesies
that the promoters of such impor
tant enterprises arc entitled to.
We are informed by the bankers
and other monied men, that thcie is
a larger demand tor, and a greater
scarcity of the filthy lucre than in a
long time betore, but express the
opinion that after the first of January
the supply will be abundant.

Quite a number of our leading citi
zens met Thursday evening at the
law office of T. J. Galloway Esq.
to confer together and take some
action in reference to having the
survevinr party of the C. & A.
Kron -l m,l-o trvpv that
will embrace Butler in its route ; and
while no one was present to speak
authoritively for the company, it was
known that three hundred dollars was
required by the company to defray
the expenses ot the survey, which
amount was raised in quick time,
erving the right to the contribu
tors the right to indicate the route to
be surveyed. We are heartily glad
that the live men of our city are
waking up to the importance of this
enterprise to Butler. It is the life
blood ot us, and we must have the
road.
To Whom it May Concern.
All persons indebted to us by note or
account will come forward and settle

be settled before Jan. 1st, 1SS2.
