Seventeen years ago the cornea-
. r
erate armies, after four years
of
hard fighting, surrendered to the
victorious North. They laid down
their arms in an honest spirit and
went back to their homes to rebuild
shattered fortunes and make glad
the places desolated by grim war.
Through all the long years of that
strife, there was a heroism ana a de
votion o a cause which -made the
world look on with admiration. In
the face of difficulties and beset by
privations such as few nations have
ever had upon them, the southern
troops marched forth to meet their
enemies on the battlefield, matched
as one to tave.
No braver men ever spilled blood
or rallied around the flag of their
country than these. Back at home
where wife, mother, sister, sweet
heart, whose parting words to hus
band or ho in trrey were such as
that Spartan mother said to her boy
as fehe handed him his buckler.
There was a pathos in war which
has no eaual in anv other curse. It
is always horrible, blighting and
merciless. The story of the camp
life ot the southern soldier is yet to
be written. The world knows little
of his sufferings, privations and hun
ger. Unlike his enemy, he had no
wealth at home, no friends abroad.
Year by year the supplies grew
scanter and scanter, until at last,
when the immortal Lee, at Appo
mattox, ravc up the unequalled
struerele, there was scarce a crust of
bread to each tattered, dirty, smoke-
begrimed and battle scared hero in
hi little army. Worse still, there
was but scant store at home for the
loved ones.
But the stru!?fle ended : the last
reveille was heard ; the last roll-call
wilt answered ; the sullen roar ot
the cannon, the shriek ot the shot
and shell, the rattle of the rifles and
the hiss ot the swift bullet, died away,
and the gentle hum of industry was
heard in the land.
True it is these valient warriors
for cause they believed holy, went
back to home only to find shattered
fortunes, desolate firesides, Rachels
weeping tor their slain dead. But
they were not the men to quail in
the hour of blackest gloom. They
.- wko had met the enemy on so many
bloody battlefields, where their com
rade were mown down like grass,
were not daunted at the poverty and
ruin which stared them tu th
face. They went to work, and like
true men, made no sign of despon
dency or regret. Thev conquored
in the field, the shop, the office, the
counting room, and in the store, and
of their work we mavthis day write,
"Peace hath her victories no less re- ,
nowncd than war."
But they could not forget the life
on the held of carnage ; they would
not it they could. These memories
are burned into them as with a hot
iron, and they hold them scared,
as use nacige ot a true man. ear
after year they have met to meet
comrades, tell once more of the sut-
ferings but pleasures, of the days ot
their soldier life ; to recount the dan
gers passed through ; the long mar
ches ; the -nights of chill and rain;
the battles they fought, and- the
weary days of pain as they tossed
on the hospital bunk.
These' are things which thev talk
and laugh and joke.
But not ail. Now then the lips
quiver, the voice dies into a whisper
and the eyes grow suddenly dim.
They have spoken the name of a
brave comrade who went down with
his face to the foe, murmuring in
scarce udible tones, "Tell them at
home I died like a man."
To-day these men met in their an
nual re-union, in this city- How
hearty and warm was the hand-shake
comrade gave comrade-; how fervent
the "God bless you, old hoy!"
To them .Seualia gives cordial
greeting. She asks them to be her
guests and to share her hospitality.
Her hand is extended to each one ot
these old soldiers, and her lips
speak words of welcome. They are
uttered from the heart, thev mean
all that they possibly can. May this
be a reunion never to be forgotten j
