Charlotte, N. C, Oct
months past there have been rumors
of a terrible apparition which has
frightened all the women and chil
dren in Clear Creek township. The
women say that lor two weeks they
have been subject to terrifying'
visits, in the absence of their hus
bands, fiom a creature like a shiny
Dlack negress, .with long hair and
gleaming eyes. She asks in hardly
.distinguishable gibberish tor a baby
to eat, and makes efforts to get hold
ot the children. The men, getting
tired of the fears of their wives, de
termined to try to catch the creature,
and for the last week crowds of far
mers have been daily and nightly
chasing her, without success. The
first effort to catch her was made a
week ago by; John Roberts, a black
smith. Tne wiltl creature had ap
peared several times at a fire which
it was the habit of Cortey Moore,
colored, of the neighborhood, to
light after dark in the yard of. his
house for the preperation of his
meals. Roberts was put there to
watch tor her and she appeared even
before the flames were well kindled.
She presented such a wild look in
the halt light and asked tor ioou in
such a wild fashion that Roberts was
demoralized. lie recovered how
ever, made an outcry and attempted
to sieze the woman, but she slipped
through his hands and disapparcd :n
the dark shadows ot the woods.
Tuesday morning Mannar Stephen
Cawell caught sight ot the creature
and chased her across an open field.
He was badly hurt in his efforts to
keep up with her, and reported that
she outran a buck and cleared four
corn rows at a leap. That same
night she was again enticed from the
gloom of the woods by the kindling
of a fire and was chased by thirty
men, without success. Capt. Marsh
Allen later in the day met her in the
neighborhood, with her face torn and
bleeding and a long bloody knife in
har hand. The creature was naked
and so unearthly and terrible looking
to him that he says he is not sure it
is a human being. Her hair reached
almost to her feet, but was kinky
like that of the African. It is not
mere fright that has caused the coun

A Poker-Playing Millionair.e
A millionaire in New York who
dispenses princely hospitality, has a

The deal giving the millionaire the
eight, nine and ten and jack of

got the queen of hearts. The Min

already three kings, and in the
draw got the fouith. Quietly the
players began to bet. The pile
amounted at last to $600,000, when
the millionaire called his opponent.
When the Minister laid down his
four kings the banker put his straight
flush beside them without a word.
The Minister seemed a little sur
prised, but merely said: "Very
good the ; the money is youis." He
had lost $300,000, but it did not
sour him a bit. The game was not
resumed, but he talked as pleasantly
as it he had won a fortune instead
of losing one. The banker seemed
embarassed, and his friends who
had dropped out ot the game, were
uncomfortable. He decided on the
spot that it would not do to hae any
more poker-playing in his house.
It might be said that he drew his
friends there to fleece them. He

the farmers, some mounted and oth
ers on foot, assembled for the pur
pose ot surrounding a swamp in
which the creature is Known iu
hid. There were tour hundred men
banded together tor the chase. At
-
first it was attempted to run her
down with bloodhounds, bnt they re
fused to chase her, which deepened
the sunerstitious feeling with which
the men as well as the women of the
community began to regard her.
The men then made the attempt to
catch her, but without success. The
excitement among the negroes and
simple country folks is intense. By
the more intelligent farmers from
that section the theory is advanced
that the creature is some half-witted
woman, who has been so long hunted
down that she lives in terror of all
human beings, and therefore lives
like an animal in the forest, her ne
cessities having forced her to eat
anything she can get, including even
human rlesh.

The "irreproachable waltzer" is ;
stmit frame of li?ht wood, ot about
five feet in height, and remotely re
sembling an old-fashioned kite

padded "rest" for the lady's hand,
and at about the middle 01 tne irame
is a jointed arm, capable ot being
placed around a young lady's waist
and securely fastened in that position
with a thumb screw. The frame
has two feet, furnished with castors,
each one of which has a universal
joint, so that it can turn freely in any
direction. The whole affair weighs
only five pounds, and it is made to
fold together, so that a lady can car
ry it in her hand, either with or
without a shawl strap.
