this city. The morning train now

Rev. Chas. Bohn of 'Carthage
will hold services m the Episcopal
church on Fulton street Sunday
morning and evening, ihe 22nd inst.,
usual hours.
Groves Bro's. the butchers, drove
through the city last evening ten head
of very tine two and three year old
cattle, which thev will slaughter as
needed. These gentlemen are ex
perienced in their business an,! know
that it pays best to kill nothing but
first class beef.
Mrs. P. L. Wyattdied last Friday
evening at her residence on High
Street. She had been confined with
consumption, and this dread destroyer
finally caused her death. Deceased
leaves a husband and three children.
The remains were buried Suuday
June ith from the family residence.

purchase of a pair of buckskin pants
which he delights showing the boys

One of those good old tashioned
picnics was given last Sunday on the
Mia ma. Messrs. Ilagedorn, C. XV.
Glorious and Chas. Reuthel furnish
ed the music, and the young ladies
spread the luncn.
A very pleasant social party, con
sisting of three or four couples, was
given at Mr. Tom Day's last Mon
day evening. Vocal and instrument
al music entertained the company
until the small hours called them
home.

Messrs. Ben Bigstaff and . L.
Hickman, the boss stock raisers of
Bates, left last week for Cheyenne
Wyoming, with several car loads of
fine blooded bulls. They stopped
at Denver. Col., where they sold
one car, and Mr. Bigstaff returned
home from that city. Mr. B. says
he met many old friends in Denver,
some of whom lie had fought with
in the war.
Lost: Early Monday morning,;
June 9th, off my ice wagon, one set
of ice scales, with capacity to draw
200 lbs. The finder will be suitably
rewarded by leaving same at F. B.
Fay's store, on north Mam street.

Dr. Bc-tz claims the well in front
of his property on Dakota street,
therefore, the reason why it was not
filled up in obedience to the order
ot the City Council. Now, the
Times don't care a snap who the
well belongs to, only that it be matte
secure against children falling into
it and getting drowned. Unless Dr.
Betz puts a pump into the well it
should be condemned as a public
nuisance and filled up.
U e usually make a cut on straw hats
after the 4th ot July, but owing id the
fact mat this has been a verv backward
season, we now commence our reduc
tion ot 33I3 per cent on all our straw
goods. A ollar hat for 65 cents.

A correspondent from Summit
asks:
"Why did the young lady remark
that he had rather go with a bache
lor, when told by Mr. Bigstaff that
he would send a young widower
around to escort her to Sunday
school?" Mr. B. desires to say that if the
writer of the above would cultivate
ladies acquaintance instead ot devot
ing his entire time to cultivating

which has been pending 111 our
Criminal court for the last fifteen
months, was finally brought to a
close yesterday evening.
For nearly a week the court house
has been crowded with anxious and
expectant listeners to one of tht
j most famous trials that has ever oc-
currcd in Bates county.
Abie, eloqutnt and distinguished
lawyers were engaged on both sides,
and their efforts were characterized
ny a soirit of fairness and gentility
seldom witnessed in an affair where
so much is involved.
The arguments were closed Mon
day evening at 9 o'clock, and the ju
ry, in the charge ot a deputy sheriff,
taken to the grand jury room. They
remained in secret consultation un
til half past two yesterday (Tues
day) evening, and just as we go to
press, the news is upon the streets,
and in the mouths of crowds of inter
ested citizens gathering upon the
coiners that the jury has returned a
verdict of
MURDER IN THE SECOND DEGREE,
and fixed the penalty ot 19 years in
the penitentiary.
The first ballot taken after the re
tirement into the jury room stood as
follows :
2 for acquittal on grounds ot acci
dental shooting; 6 tor c.ipital punish
ment; 1 for murder in the 4th de
gree, and 3 for mu'vler in the 2nd
( decree.

learned from them that a motion for
a new trial will immediately be

on a bill of exceptions which is not
yet prepared.

to aid in making arrangments for the
celebration of July 4th, at Butler,
are requested to meet at the court
house to-nisht. A full turn out is
desired.
The Timks is informed that this
years observance ot the 4th, will be
attended with the most elaborate
arrangements ever made for the oc
casion before, and "a grand success
is expected. Some ot the most dis
tinguished speakers in the State will
be present, and among the number
its said, Mr. Peak, who was employ
ed by the prosecution in the Hol
comb case will be the orator.
The display of fire works will be
the most extensive ever exploded ii?
