Why He Never 3IarnJ.
New York Letter to Baltimore American.
.People have often wondered that
a man of Mr. Tilden's vat wealth,
domestic tastes, and political prom

How to Tell When a Person Ls Dead
While we are decidedly in favor
of cremation, we do not admit that
the fear of being buried alive should !
be a reason to cause us to reject ;
bunal and adopt cremation. There
are two simple tests by which we
can always convince ourselves
whether a person is really dead or
not. Our test is the same that has
been crowned with a prize by the
French government, which had for
ears offere I a large reward for the
discovery of any method, always
applicable, always reliable, and one
that may be practiced by the most j
ignorant. The method of determin- I

following:
When the fingers of a person who
is supposed to be dead are fully ex
tended, but kept near together, and
it placed in front ot a candle light
in a dark room, a peculiar bright
color,due to the capillary circulation,
will be visible where the fingers
touch esch other, it there is any lite
left.
The other is based upon the well
known fact that the muscles of a
human being will never respond for
longer time to the strongest electrical
current than for one hour and a half
after death ; while as long as life
lasts, may its evidence be ever so
little, the contractility ot the muscles,
if not affected by some forms of
paralyMS and in cases thus affected,
when death seems to occurr,it always
is real remains. Medical and Sur
