President Clevi-lamlV Return
Tho clone of President Cleveland's
rent western and southern tour was
Art satisfactory uh its beginning was
njjupiciouH. Every incident of a
j residential progress which lanted
three weeks, and whic h was clouded
l.-..nf .!. untoward event, attract-
i- public interest. The whole coun- j
try may have participated in tain
tour of it popular chief magistrate.
While thero was in the demount
stration much of that curiosity which
would attract crowds to nee any
t-wmdeut of the United States, the
IiDthusiaHra with which President
CloToland was greeted by the repub
lican communities of the northwest
ud by the democrats of the south
t-ore unmistakable evidence of his
stronghold on nation's good wi!!
So great are the proofs of his popu
larity that if tho election for presi
dent nhould take place to-morrow
few can doubt he would bo chosen
by an overwhelming majority.
What may occur in the course of a
-,car to turn this popular tide it is
aot easy to conjecture; but it may
be confidently predicted that the
peoplo's regard will not be lost with
in that time by any act of his own.
President Cleveland is one of those
o called "magnetic men" who at
tract multitudes of followers, often
without reason; but he possesses the
staying qualities w hich inspire and
retain public confidence. He has
succeeded in establishing a thorough
understanding with tho masses of
the people by showing that hi; b -Keve&
iu them and is in entire sym
pathy with their highest aims. The
country is convinced of his honesty
of purpose and of the strong com
mon sense which he brings to bear
upon the affairs of his administra
tion without ostentation or flourish.
It seems that he is determined to be
president of the whole people not
of a party.
There are hundreds of stump ora
tors who could make a better speech
lbin any made by Cleveland, but it
in doubtful whether there is another
lublio man in the land who could
make so favorable an impression up
on his countrymen of all parties as
that made by President Cleveland dur
ing his tour. No brilliant rhetoric
corruscated in his speeches; they
rere, indeed, as plain as they could
well hare been, but they were admir
ably adapted to the occasion. If it
tie true, as President Cleveland's en
mies have asserted, that it was a po
litical tour, they must concede that
fce- covered bis purpose with great
cleverness and skill. Throughout
lis journeyings not a sentiment es
ugted his lips that could have be
trayed such a design. In his numer
ous epeeches he never uttered a
word calculated to win partisan sup
port or to provoke partisan resent
ment. Horace Greeley's matchless
speaking tour was made in a candi
dacy for the presidency. Sir. Blaine
when on a similar campaign drew
Cbousands of enthusiastic partisans
fohcar partisan harangues. Presi
dent Cleveland's route was lined by
an enthusiastic people, and if he had
3 political motive he managed with
consummate art to let nobody into
fiis secret.
The upshot of it all is that Presi
dent Cleveland returns to the White
House with a strong accession to
IJie popularity that belonged to him
Hhen ho left it three weeks aero,
whatever some democratic politi
cians may say or think in regard to
li course, they recognize the fact
fat any attempt to supplant him
tould be impracticable. From hints
rflade by newspapers hostile to
Cleveland it is evident that a hope
H entertained that in vase the demo
crats should lose New York in No-nrtn-ber
by reason of the Henry
CJeorge movement, and because of
Hie apakhy incident to on off year, a
reactionary movement in behalf of a
iIHv candidate might be successful.
But the result would be likely to ut
terly defeat such a calculation, and
Would only intensify the popular de
wand for Cleveland's nomination.
In the present political situation he
is regarded as indispensable by tht
democratic half of the nation, and
very considerable portion of tin
epublicia moiety is fast beco:niii.

'Wild Bill" Tnylor, clerk at Goss

received a letter from Fiank James, ,
who left this city several months
since for Dallas, Tex., where he is
employed as a salesman in the cloth
ing house of A. & E. Mittenthal. It
will be seen from the letter publish
ed below that Frank is not enjoying
good health, which confirms the
newspaper reports to that effect.
The letter says:
Dear William: Yours uf the 13th.
just received. You of course, can
not rely on anything the newspapers
publish in regard t myself. The
last is only in keeping with the ten
thousand lies told in the past twen
ty years. I am doing well, so far as
making money is concerned. At the
same time I am not satisfied, from
the fact that I have not seen a well
day since I have been in the State.
I am told, however, that when I be
come acclimated I shall be all right
I might go on and write you a
lengthy communication and draw on
my imagination for things that
would be calculated to interest you,
but will cut it short by saying that
I was glad to hear from you, and
hope you will write me often. Kind
est regards to all our friends iu Xe

Frank James.

The Royal Baking Powder received tho highest award over all competitors at
the Vienna World's Exposition, 1873 ; at the Centennial, Philadelphia, 1876 ; at tha
American Institute, New York, and at State Fairs throughout the country.
No other article of human food has ever received such high, emphatic, and uni
versal endorsement from eminent chemists, physicians, scientists, and Boards of
Health all over the world.
Noti The above Diaoram illustrates the comparative worth of various Baking
Powders, as shown by Chemical Analysis end experiments made by Prof. Schedler.

Prof. Schedler only proves what every observant consumer of the Royal Baking
Powder knows by practical experience, that, while it coet a few tents per pound
more than ordinary kinds, it is f xt more economical, and, be&i.tcs, affords the advan

fair-minded person of these facts.
While the diagram shows some of the nlum powders to bs of a higher degree
