Westinyhouee found him engrossed
in his correspondence, aud he. did
cot deign to stop reading his letters
while the inventor extolled the mer

spoken his little piece. Yauderbilt-
for the first time seemed to take
notice of him, and looking up sud

"What's that you pay?"
So Westinghouee commenced all
over and explained how by an air
pressure of thirty pounds to the
square foot tbe brake was applied
by the engineer, and when he finish
ed he waited patiently for the ver

raised his head long enough to jerk
out:
'What's tliat you Bay about aii!"'
Westinghouse told him.
Looking him sternly in the face
the old man replied in freezing
tone: ''That will do, I Lave no time
to waste witL a fool."
Discouraged, but not disheartened,
WestingLouse left, only later to
bring his great invention to the
knowledge of the Pennsylvania rail
road authorities. At that time Tom
Scott was the president of the cor

practicability of the invention and
allowed some of his cars to be equip

arrived he oue day received a letter
from Commodore Yauderbilt, asking
him to call at the Central's office.
Mr. Westingbouse's reply was terse
and to the point. He simply wrote:
"I have no time to waste with a j

to eighty bushels per acre he said:
"Gentlemen, two jeais ago tbe
democrats had emblazoned on every
wall, 'Vote for Grover Cleveland aud
get a dollar a bushel for jour wheat!'
Nowfyou are getting 40 cents.'"
Instantly a stalwatt demon at ex
clamed: "What's tbe matter with
45 cents per bushel for coin?'' The
crowd went wild. Tbe colonel didn't
have a word to say in reply. He
recognized, too late, that he was in
the midst of a corn growing section
and that wheat was of secondary
consideration, aud that if he cbai g

wheat down to 40 ceuts the crowd
would credit the democrats witb tbe
