Carlisle Currency Bill Strikes Its Firt cus as a means of electing United
Obstacle, j States Senators are doing touch to
Washington, I). C, Jan. 9. The 1 '"rce the early adoption of a six
Carlisle currency bill, which hasj1"'1 amendment to the Federal
been under debate io the House fr -Constitution, making Senator elec-
ab ut two weeks, was ituotuiniouHly j
ditched to day. It had i.ot htreugth
enough to surmount tbe hint patli
ameutary obstacle placed in u path.
The committer on rules, iu obedt
en to the decree of the Democratic
caufux on Monday, brought iu an
order to close general debate and
proceed under the five miuute rule
until Saturday, when the final vote
should be taken, but the suppotters
of the bill showed lamentable weak
ness. They were unable to order
the previous question, tbe demand
therefor bein refused, first by a
rising vote of 92 to 101. aod theu
on a yea and nay vote of 124 to 129.
The advocates of the bill were dumr
founded when tbey discovered that
they had been beaten iu tbe prelum
nary skirmish and the order was
withdrawn. This was tbe first re
verse the committee on rules had
sufif-red in four years. Au analvst
of the vote shows that all of the 124
votes in favor of the motion were
cast by Democrats, while eighty-two
Republicans, thirty nine Democrats
eight Populists voted against it Of
the thirty uiu- Democratic votes

Mr. Outhwaite hurriedly demaud

was called. Thia resulted in tbe
defeat of the special rule by 124 yeas
to 129 nays. The roll call was watch
ed with intense interest, but tbe
announcement of the result only
coufirtned the defeat of the advocates
of tbe measure. Tbe supporters of
the bill made a desperate effort to
secure a majority but to no purpose

Washington, D. C , Jan 9 Many
of the Democratic Senators received
the announcement of the adverse
vote on the currency bill as a sum
raons to the Senate to take the
question up aud Cud a way out of
the difficulties with which the coun
try finds itself surrounded. Sena
tor Voorhees took the first step for
he formal consideration of the mat
ter by issuing a call for the meetiug
of the finance committee to be held
tomorrow for the purpose of canvass
ing the entire situation, and if pos
sible devising means of improving
the condition of the treasury.
It is understood Senator Vest has
in mind the outline of a plan for a
bill which he may submit to tbe
committee and which may prove tbe
basis of future action. The two
priucipal features of the plan are:
Firt, to authorize the issuance of a
sufficient number of low rate bonds
to retire the $340,000,000 worth of
greenbacks, and second, to provide

of about $150,000,000. This is sug
gested as a compromise upon which
the bond advocates aud the silver
meu can agree, but the scheme has
not met general favor so far as it
has been cauvassed.

Sedalia, Mo., Jan 7. The last
serious wreck on the Missouri, Kan

cuired at Cale, I. T., a few days ago
aud resulted in $30,000 damages to
tbe company, is the eleventh wreck
that has occurred within one half

years. As tbe sory runs among the
employes of the company, ten years
ago a widow, whose premises join
the track, had her ouly cow killed
by a train, and for some reason or
other tbe railroad company refused
or failed to satisfy her claim. Then

the Almighty to redress her wrongs,

Washington, D C , January 10.
Gen. Harry Heth, the Confederate
Brigadier whose action brought on
the battle of Gettysburg, is danger
ously ill with acute pneumonia at
bis home in tbe city. Gen. Heth
commanded the a vance of Lc-e s
at my when it entered Virginia. He
was intent on maktug the most of
the splendid opportunities for for
age and supplies. As he moved
forward he heard that there w-re
two or three shoe factories in th
vicinity of Gettysburg, aud took a
couple of regiments over there to
clean out the stock, for footwear was
then what the Confederates needed
most. Heth whs headed towatd
Hariisburg, and such a thing as a
battle at Gettysburg was not in the
programme of either Lee or Meade.
Heth's regiments, while after shoes.
fell in with Federal cavalry hurrying
up in advance of the Army of the
Potomac and got into a fight Other
troops came up and the fighting
grew harder. All night troops
pressed forward aud thus the battle
of Gettysburg was developed on
ground in the selection of which
ueitker side had any choice, all be
cause Heth turned aside from his
course due north in order

In 1872, G n. Jame A. Garfield,
in a speech in Congress, said thai
the high water mark in pension leg
islation had bt-en reached. "We may
reasonable expect," said the distin
guished statesman aud soldier, "that
tbe expenditures for pensions will
hereafter steadily decrease, unlets
our legitdati n should be un warrant,
ably extravagant." ThiTe were tbeft
on the pension rolls 232,229 names
and the annual expenditure wad
$30,000,000. Now the United States
government pays $140,000,000 a
year to 969,541 pensioners. Instead)
of "steadily decreasing," as predict
ed bv Gen GrbVld, tbe pension
list because of legislation which was
called iu advance "unwarrantably ex -
ravagant," hi growu constantly.
Witbiu tbe last six years it has
doubled. To day uearly thirty year&
after tbe war ended, one in every
seventy of the entire population is
on the federal pensiou list.
If there were no expenditures for
pensions the receipts from interna)
reveuue duties, including the in
come tax would pay all the expenses
of the government. There need io
be no tariff taxes of any kind levied.
