State of tht Dtid Between Death and the Judgment Sermon by Rev. A. M. Ross pastor of the Baptist church of this city. Men have explored the great oceans and mapped out the lines of passage over which mighty ships ply as they carry the world's commerce. They have sides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us that would come from thence." Luke 16:26. "He that is unjust let him be unjust still: and he that is filthy, let him be filthy still." Rev. 21:11. The soul during the time be- penetrated the jungle and the ; tween death and the judgment wilderness, descended into the exists without the body. This depths of the earth and have fact is common to both the good made known many of her hidden I and the bad. "Then shall the treasurers. They have made idust return to the earth as it charts of the heavens and found! was; and the spirit shall return out the marvelous movements of I unto God who gave it." Ed. many of the heavenly bodies, j 12:7. Stephen saw in a dying Wonderful, indeed, are the ac-jmoment the heavens open and hievements wrought by man's; called on the Lord; saying, "Lord genius as one reviews the know ledge of the world to-day and compares it with what it was one hundred years ago. But with all the brilliant achieve ments of men, had not God come Jesus receive my spirit" Acts 7:59. Following this statement we are iold that they took up his body and buried it. See w at is said in I. Cor. 15th Chapter about the spiritual and the na- to U3 with his divine revelations : tural body. For wise and great as are some men, not of them is able to give us a of reliable knowledge about soul in the eternal world, are, therefore, limited - in resurrection when united with the spiritual body that shall come one forth from the planting of the ray ; natural body. the The word "Paradise" is an We other name for the nlace of the the righteous dead during the inter study of this subject to the facts 1 mediate state. Jesus said to the found in the Bible. thief on the cross who In abode is a place of torment And that the events of the judgment will not relieve their condition but make it worse by giving them at that time their full penalty for all the evil instigated by them while on earth. My final conclusion upon the whole subject may be summed up as follows: All spirits go into the spirit world at death, and that the Bible name for that abode is (2) Hades or (1) Sheol; that Sheol or Hades, is divided by an im passable gulf into two places one for the home of the saved called paradise, heaven, the holy city ttc. ; the other for the home of the lost, called hell, the lake of fire, outer darkness, place of torment etc. And finally, that the intermediate state of both the saved and the lost is the period which they experience while out of the body as spirits or souls, that the judgment day will not change their abode but fit them for complete happiness in the place of happiness, and complete punishment in the place of punishment.
