I On Friday afternoon the pa trons of Williams School gather ; ed at the school house to spend j few hours listening to the lit tle folks recite. Considering i tlie weather, a fair crowd was present. About 2 o'clock the teacher, Miss Grace McLain. made a few ! opening remarks, and printed programs were then distributed among the audience. , This program appears in an other part of this paper. Guy Randol was present with I Edison phonograph, and treated ; the audience to several selec tions of good music between the i acts. Among the numbers were "An Qkl-time Husking Bee," I "The Treacher and the Hear," "My Uncle's Farm." "Good 1 Evening, Caroline," "Uncle ! Josh's Adventures in a Depart ment Store" and three band pieces. P.y looking nt the blackboard one could see that the teacher, Mfos Grace, is something of an i artist. Two pictures drawn by ; her would do credit to a profes , sional. Miss Grace studied draw ing at J. M. A. One of her , pictures, "Waiting for Santa Claus," represented an old-time ! fireplace and irons, mantiepiece - and all. On the mantle was a ! clock pointing to five minutes ' till 12. Four little stockings hung in a row along the mantle. The other picture was of old Santa just in the act of going down the chimney snow on the roof, blue heavens, the pale moon in tho distance. This , drawing was in six colors, and ' w as hard to beat. One of the pupils, Marvin Wil j liarr.s, aged 13. drew one of the i pictures after his teacher, the "Waiting for Santa." It was ; good only Marvin had but three stockings in the row where the original had four. Most of the pupils are umall. AH the members of the" school board were present. . Little Bachelor. SAM VANDIVORT. JACKSON. MO. OLD SOLDIERS, ATTENTION. Any old soldier who made a homestead entry of 40, HO or 120 acres in any State in the Union before the year 1874 has a claim coming to him from the Govern ment provided he has never sold this right or taken up another homestead. It does not make any differ ence whether he proved up on his original homestead entry or simply left it. A soldier who never made a homestead entry, or one who en tered land after June 22, 1874, has nothing to sell. We buy these claims. The widow or heirs of a soldier can also sell these rights. R. H.
