Now, we are opposed to pensions on general princi ples, and more in particular in this connecion. There is no more reason why a school teacher should draw a pension than any other person. We, for one, are proud of the independence of our country, which ought to incul cate an independent spirit, and we are opposed to anything that will fos ter or create dependence even to the old and feeble, who in this free country can generally mako their way, if they will, which has been proven by the old, battle-scarred veterans who wore tho gray. GufFy ban been appointed post mnBter at this place. Mr. Gully camo hero from Indiana in the fall of 1000, to look after land interests of clients, and by strict attention to business has built up a nice practice in law. IJelng from Indiana, he was naturally a Re publican and the postollico comes to him as a rewatd for faithful party ser vice. He was his party's nominee for representative in the last election and though defeat wus expected, ho did his part in cutting down the Democratif majority as a result of which one lone Republican waB elected, breaking tho record in Pemiscot county. One of the latest enterprises aided by him is the organization of the Ilayti Real Estate Company. We predict that Mr. Gufiy will make an cflicient odicer and that lie bus only entered in the political arena. We wish him success in his new undertaking. Tho' great crowd and jam at tho postollico Sunday afternoons when the mail is opened is becoming almost unbearable, and the postollico will have to do one of two things, get a larger room or to leave the doors open for a longer time. The fact is, the mail ought to bo opened at noon. Much important mail is received, here on the noon train, and especially Sun day papers from tho south, und if this mail was opened it would leave less work for the afternoon hour, so the postollico attendants would not be hurt by this change, as they have to handle tho mail anyway. J. L. D irris has more concrete walk than any man in town, and what John Dorris has done others can do. There is no excuse fortius town to dragaloni; in the old rut, and if tle people expect to do so the sooner they can got rid of the Herald thebettfr, for we are going to make a light for the general improve ment of Ilayti. Miss Sallie Roberts of St. visiting Mrs. Dollie Dorris. Louis is "Hf MPig..i -. 1-..U Tho annual meeting of tho Bank of Ilayti was had yesterday, and tho re sults of tho past year's business was highly gratifying. The' earning ca pacity lias been good, and the general outlook is encouraging. This is tho oldest bank in Haytl, and has the largest capital and surplus, and the stockholders are all good, sub stantial men. C. V. Wells, Jr., the retiring cashier, has done good work, and he carries with him tho conlidcnco and good-will, not only of tho bank olllcials, but of the public generally. All tho old officers were elected, ex cept J. D. Long as director. L. L heller was olected in placo of Mr. Long. The resignation of C. P. Wells, Jr. was accepted and T. A. McNail entered upon the duties of cashier. A lady went into I. Kohn's store and blushingly asked Arthur Allen if ho "had any of those clastic bands, capa ble of being elongated and adjusted at pleasure, and usedby tho feminine por tion of mankind for putting around the lower extremitos of their locomotive members tokeop in the proper position and the required altitude, habilaments of their tibias." Arthur had to be fanned for about two hours. Tuesday Gov. Patterbon of Ten nessee vetoed the state-wide prohibi tion bill. In his message be said tho bill was a violation of the party plat form, sot aside the recorded will of the people, destroyed property and that no arbitrary prohibition bill would ever be obeyed. Opponents of the bill claim t hat they have enough votes to defeat its second passage, but another state wide bill to prohibit the manufacture of intoxicating drinks was passed, to go into effect January 10, 1910. Later: The senate voted to pass the bill over tho governor's veto. The vote was . 2D to 13. It now goes to tho house. LOOK w w This Space is Next Week We Have Something to Tell You.
