THAT MAGAZINE PROPOSITION.
All you folks who disregarded our
idvise and our exposure ol a curtain
magazine proposition and write up of
Pemiscot county a few month ago,
have doidillt'sM learned ere this that
we were right, and have had occasion
to relied that instead of being u hut-in-stur,
the Hayti Herald uu wiser than
they knew.
Of course ver. few took our advise,
and instead of thanking us for it, we
were roundly censured ly sonic. Hut
it mattered not to us. We had a duty
to the public to perform, and only
waited for time to prove that we were
right, which Old Father Time never
fail-, to do.
Hut the thintr is even more a com
plete failure than we thought it would j
he, and the tiling will likely not be
published at all. We do not know
how many people will lose money on
the proposition. So far as wt: know
only one merchant in Hayti paid out
any mone, about $1."1. Hut nearly
all who went into the scheme will lose
their pholraphs, unless they pay the
engraving house for the engravings.
Tlie engraving house is now writing
to as many as thev can learn their
names, wanting them to pay for thebo
engra villus, proposing to cut about
om-tliird olf the price, but in fact the
price they name is the regular retail
price. The reason for this is that the
promoter placed his order for the en
graving to bo dune, and could not or
would not pay for it, and the en-graser.-,
have the work left on their
hands, and of course want the
people to pa. lor it.
It seems that the promoter was try
ing to do ever thin,' on 'wind," even
t the printing of the magazine, but it
has not worked successlully.
We arc sorry lor those who must
lose their photographs, and we hope
this will serve as a warning to who
who take hold of things without a
substantial guarantee.
It will generally be lound to pay to
consult your home printer on printing
and advertising matters, and take his
advise. He can print anything there
is to print, advertise anything there is
to advertise, and lie will treat you
right every day in the ear.
HAYTI TAKE NOTICE.
The Steele News says:
"The town marshal has notilied
mini of our citi.ens to see that their
back yards and closets are put in
proper sanitary condition. This is a
move in the right direction and the
marshal should see to it that his or
ders are promptly enforced."

and country now than over known, but
little or no cllort lias been made to
clean up the town and put it in a
healty condition.

were elected to look after the best in
terests of the people, and the. certain!
should do so.
It is a part of every live newspaper's
business to discuss public all'airs, and
while we regret an thing in the form
of criticism, we certainly arc ffoinjf to
perform our duty to the public, regard
less of friend or foe.
Nowadays wiien people want anj
thinff they look in tho newspapers to
lind where to get it. If tho. want tho
services of a painter, a carpenter, a
plasterer, a lawyer, a doctor, or unv
special line of goods, they expect to
lind what tlioy want in the advertising
columns of their homo paper, if tlioy
want tho best. People who do not ad
vertise do not know how much thev
miss, and they certainly do miss a
lurge per cent of tho best and most
intelligent trade the class that read
and keeps posted. Judicious adver

Taft will not stop at Caruthersvillo
on his trip down tho river. Ho will
leave Hickman, Ky., Oct. 2H at 5 p. in
and passing Carutlieravllle that night
lie will arrive at Memphis tho next
morning at 8:00. Hotter look out, Taft,
Carutliersville is no slouch when it
comes to voting, and Huytl is taking
lessons. Presidents are sinull pota
toes in these diggins, anyway.

been receiving threatening letters
from the night riders, and hero is
what lie lias to say about it:
"if the party who wrote us the
threatening letter, signed 'Night
Riders, One Thousand Strong,' and
that 'death would be the result' if I
did not publish an article they sent,
will let himself lit known to us, we will
tell him the reason we did not publish
same. If the low down cur will only
make himself known to us, we will as
sure him, or them, that we will
mention it to no one outside, and me
and him, or them, can settle same.''

Our city ordinances need revising.
As the arc now there is much room
for misunderstanding and mistakes.
The latest matter to cause confusion
was the show license. Following the
ordinances to the letter, any .show un
der tent or canvas would have to pay
'17i a day, but tiiat is more than anj
small show can pay, and has caused
tho ordinance to be disregarded. Of
course certain classes ol shows ought
to be prohibited, but the ordinances
should be made plain, and enforced
to the letter.
