ADAMS Notary Public Ileal Estate und Insurance Otlico South Side Square Hayti, - - - Missouri tfo ftk NCI3 more Christmas is hero and the New Year, and the Hayti Herald invokes the most bountiful blessings for every one. But Christmas for many of us may not be what it should 0.), nor what we would like for it to be, only we must make the best of our lot in life, and if life holds but little for us to enjoy or to be thankful for, then let us be thankful for the blessings enjoyed by others, know ing that at the end of a few fleeting years our associates of to day shall mix and commingle with us on an equality in the here after even the little ragged urchin and the wan-faced widow. In passing the holidays of the present year'th'o Hayti Her ald has both joys and regrets. We have labored, night and day since the first issue of this paper for the best interests of this town and its people, and while a few have appreciated our ef forts, many have not, and care not. We said we had both joys and regrets: We appreciate all our old friends and the hundreds of new friends we have made, and we appreciate and are highly elated and overjoyed at the class that has shown enmity, because now we know them. Our regrets are in the fai;t that our substantial support in the town where we live lias been so limited as to handicap us in many ways, and that to get out a decent and respectable paper we have had to work long hours and even deny our family many necessaries and pleasures that they should have. We thank those who have stood by tis, and in their behalf we hope the day will come In Hayti when we shall be rid of drones and the little home paper can live and prosper as it should and render better service. Of course our toes may point to the daisies when this time comes, but many of the other boys will be sleeping out there, and our files will be a vast library of obituaries, while the Herald will live on, in its modest way, to benefit and to bless those who are yet to come. So in passing this great Christian Holiday for the forty second time in life, and entering the New Year, that shows us our forty-third milestone, we do so feeling that we owe humanity no more thun we have given, having a consciousness of duty well done. To our friends: We starjd ever ready to serve you. To our enemies: We have no appologies to make and not one word that we would cull back. To take a much needed rest we will follow the time-honored custom to suspend publication on Christmas Week. There will be no issue on December 'M. The next issue will be Jan uary (5, 1010. But no subscriber will loe. The missing num ber will be undo up. We wisli all a merry Christinas and a happy and prosper ous New Year. The editor and wife appreciate, and beg to acknowledge the many invita tions to dine, to suppers, etc., which we are compelled to decline with re grets, and we are sorry to state the cause; but the llnancial end of tho newspaper business in Hayti is such that we cannot hire ollice help; we must stay in tho oflice long hours, wear old clothes and live on sow belly and white beans, and an hour at home witli the little ones and a chunk of hog meat and corn bread is more pleasure to us than a craw full of the finest banquet delicacies. house. The Farmington Times says that "L. A. DeArmond of San Bernardino, Calif., a merchant, and cousin und playmate of the late Congressman De Armond, met with an equally tragic death on the 10th, that he was electro cuted while turning on a light in his store room, which had been flooded by a storm." This probably means D. W. DeArmond, at Colton, three miles from San Bernardino, but the home papers from there mention no such in cident, and as neither town can be flooded, tho report must be a f.il.e. P. S. Missouri Wo are in receipt of voluinn 1, num ber 1, of the Marion Co., (Ark.,) Democrat, published at Yellville by S. M. Buatt. Yellville is one of the best little towns in the Ozark country of Arkansas, and Brother Buatt shows by his first Issue that he will do his town justice, and it is now up to the town to do justice by him. Campbell Citizen: Work on the oil well utClarkton was stooped last week because of the forty feet rise of quicksand in the pipe and the contrac tors did not have the necessary ma chinery to handle it successfully. The machinery is being shipped from Pitts burg, Pa., and immediately after it arrives will be put in and the boring continued. The quicksand was reach ed at a deptli of 170 feet quickly boil ed up 40 feet, stopping the work. exct-fftNGe NOTGS A census is being taken of Dexter and the Messenger says tiiat it will show that town to have a population of over 2,500. If the tattlers and tale-bearers only knew one half of what the ordinary rural editor knows about what is go ing on around town, their tongues would never cease to wiggle. If a country editor wore to snap at all the inducements hold out he would soon become a millionaire. If he ran u puper according to the popular notion he would be in the poor The receipts into the game fund of the state under the now game law are passing all predictions. At the pre sent time there is a surplus in the fund of $112,2110.24, with many counties to bo heard from. The receipts for Novem ber already received foot up $33,0.10.51 and the expenses of the department for tho month only umounted to $4, 05:5.51. The new law does not make any pro vision for distributing this surplus, which by the time the next legislature meets will doubtless reach $175,000. Now Madrid Record: History ro tates that a young Frenchman, of New Madrid county went hunting with the Indians more than a 100 years ago, und visited the Indian camp on what is now known as Apple Creek in Capo Girardeau county. Ho there meet und fell in love with u sister of Tecumseh, the greatest Indian Chief ever known in America. The maiden reciprocated tho passion of Mussonvllle; they were married according to tho Indian rltt's and run olT to this country. Tecum sell followed and took his sister back to tiie tribe, but she escaped and re turned and rejoined h'er young bus' band. They raised u very reepectablu family, und some of their decendunts still reside here. W. P. Meatte of Portageville, is one of their defendants.
