Warner DuBose to the Stu dents of the Business University Thursday, December 2d. I cz6 Clipped from THE TIMES, Farmington, Mo. STOP. LOOK AND LISTEN Ladies and Gentlemen: I am very glad I could come down here. The whole community is interested in the success of this school: not only the town and county, but this part of the State ought to have its eyes on this institution, and what it can accomplish for our young people. I know men and women who have been successful because they have sacrificed in order to do so. I am glad to sec young people taking part of their time for this work. I want to remind you of one fact as you go out into life go with one thought mind, give value received in service. A great many make a mistake In thinking of what others can do for us. On the other hand, say what am I go ing to do for someone else, and in ev ery firm and every position give val ue received. And when we give valu received, we find value received being given to us. This afternoon I shall speak "of a little point that is going to come up in every life. The use of one very small word. It will have an influence upon your career. The use of the word "No." Someone has called No one of the very great words in life and it is true the word No has playeti a very important part in a great many lives. Men and women who used it have made it a turning point. Use the word No at the right time. Use it in time of temptation, for the right, as did Moses, when he chose between a court position and the leadership of a down.trodden people. We can find that men not only in sacred history but other men have been able to say No. Patrick Henry had strength to stand up for human life and rightous ness. It seems that our lives are free and uneventful without apparently no ticing that we are in danger. There is evil in the world, and that evil, when open, can be met and overcome, but sometimes it is not recognized. If we are going to live lives that are strong and beautiful, we must be able to say No to little insiduous tempta tions. The man who is dishonest in one thing will be dishonest in an other. What I want to rivet on your minds this afternoon is that the habits rou are forming right now are habits that are going with you through life. When a man sees right and sin, he ought to be able to choose between right and wrong. I want to give to you a point that is most practical. Religion is the most practical thing in the world. The fear of God will help you to say No to any form of wrong. A high respect for womanhood is ' the distinguishing mark of a gentleman. A high and holy fear of the Deity, awe for God, loyalty to God, leadsi man to do what God would have him do. and checks evil. It is a dangerous habit to break a law. There ie not a single law of God that is not for the betterment of civilzation. Respect public opinion when it is right, but do not be governed by it wlien it is wrong. There is no recompense for man, mother, father, server of country, no full recompense for what he has done in this life, but he knows that some day he is going to receive full reward. There are periods in the life of a nation as well as of an in dividual, when it is important to stop, look and listen. This na tion is just enetring a period of unprecedented prosperity, and it is of the utmost importance to make a careful examination of the situation in order to discern hidden dangers which may im peril the rights and interests of our people. When the above principles are properly safe guarded by the governing pow er in control of the nation's af fairs, then peace, happiness and prosperity prevail. On the other hand, if a small part of the nation is permitted to accumulate wealth at the ex pense of the many, then there is grave danger of discontent and anarchy. The history of an cient Rome proves that affluence and wealth accumulated in the hands of a few were the means of undermining the foundations of that illustrious nation. The very same danger threatens the United States today, because ot the rapid accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few to the det riment of the many. A few high financiers in the East own all the railroads and great public industries of the nation whereas in France and other Democratic countries, the bonds of the large industries are issued in small denomina tions and distributed among the peasants as well as the rich. The Democratic income tax measure was intended to level things and shift the burden of taxation from the poor to the rich. It is an excellent law, and if increas ed and properly inforced will have a tendency to bridge the gulf separating the rich from the poor and bring about a more equal condition. Another admirable measure which might and should have added to the above, is, that all corporations and manufactur ing industries should be com pelled to distribute all their net proceeds over eight per cent among their employes. Already the current is leading in this di rection and business men are beginning to see the light. In many instances they are divid ing their profits with the em ployes and also distributing their t stock among their workers. Can laboring men in this country help along these noble principles? Tae ballot box is the key to the accomplishment of the reforms above mentioned, and this is in the power of the working men of this country to help along. Are you willing to put your shoulder to the wheel and push along these important issues? If so every unsophisti cated laboring man must cease looking at the color of the repre sentative's hair, contour of his face or the melody of his voice, and examine the condition of his heart. A big, large-hearted, sympa thetic friend of the working men is Robert Holmes of St. Louis.
