It is commonly understood that corn kept in the crib throughout the winter frequently loses .'ap preciably in its strength of gojmi nation and that this is often the caUSe of small jreak stalks found in our fields. Many men think that if corn sprouts and comes up it is satisfactory but this is not al ways the case, neither is it always possible to tell a strong germi natingear simply by examination. When oorn is cribbed in large quantities and fails to dry out properly before the heavy freezes of winter come it will be appreci ably injured in germination and such an injury is very difficult to detect without a germination test. Experiments have shown very conclusively that corn dried' out early and kept dry during the winter will germinate very much more strongly than corn kept in the crib and exposed when not thoroughly dry to heavy freezing. It will, therefore, pay as a rule to test corn in a germinotorin order to weed out the ears which have been most seriously injured by freezing. "" The testing of each ear that is planted in not ajlifficult proposi tion nnd experiments have shown that it is possible to test enough corn for planting 60 acres in a total ol two days time. Tins is done by preparing a box 2 feet by 3 feet square und 2 or 3 inches deep, filling this level full of sand. Nails are driven around the edp-es of the boxes 2 1-2 inches apart and allowed to pro ject 1-4 inch. Strings are then stretched back and forth across the box, dividing it into squares 2 1-2 inches each way. The ears are laid oijt on a board, number ed and ten kernels taken from each ear. The kernels are then Inserted, point downward, ' into Ihe sand so as to place them about 1-4 to 1-2 inoh below the surface. The kernels from enr No. 1 will be placed in square No. 1, the kernels from ear No. 2 will be pluced in square No. 2 and so on. Tuo box is then wetted down, covered with a oloth and put in a warm place, probily under the kitehen stove And al low to stand for four to six days, sprinkling with water every day or two to keep the sand moist. Ears which are not suitable for planting can thus be detected by the poor germination shown, and disoarded. Such a plan requires little time and will frequently in crease the corn yiold from 5 to 10 per cent which on an average of 50 acres will" pay a very large profit for the time spent. M. F.
