THE PHILADELPHIA TIMES, 1SS4. Tift: Times will enter upou the new year stronsrer and more prosperous than ever lie fore in its history -more widely read and quoted, more heart ily commended, and more fiercely criticized, with a more complete or ganization, ami an able ssolV of contributors ant with the same independence and fearless ness that has made it successful anil powerful in the past. The Times has no party to follow, no candi dates to advance, but wiil meet every issue, as it has ever done, with consistent devotion to the riuht. to honest, frovernment, and the pub lie welfare. And. while maintaining its posi tion as the leading journal of Philadelphia, it will aim to le continually in the atlvanco in ail that can add value to a newspaper. The value of a newspaper is not in its size or display, but in the iutelliyren.ee ami care, the conciseness and freshness with which it is edited. The Times sjiends lavishly for news from all parts of the world, tint all its dis patches are carefully edited and condensed, in order to trive the complete news of the dav in j the most concise and attractive shape, ami with it a larsre variety of entertaining' and instruc tive readim:. The best writers at home and ! abroad are employed to enrich its columns, ! and to make it a journal adapted both to the busv man and to the leisure of the home cir cle, a welcome visitor to intelli.srent and honest citizens of everv political, religious and social taste. The Weeki.t Times is altogether different from the weekly newspapers of twenty years aire. The day of those papers have jrone by. The telegraph and lotter hx-al newspuiers everywhere, especially in the thrivintr centres of rural population, have made the old weekly metropolitan newspaper unsatisfyinsr. Those that clin.ir to their ancient usages have lost their hold on our forward-moving people; they are but shadows of their former irreatness. and ; they have but a shadow of their former power. ! i nose papers nave nan tneir usetuiness. nut it : is trone; and. with it, they are sroing-, too. It i was not the fault of the pavrs: it was the i;n f provement of the country that broujrut about I the change. Men and women, wherever they live, mw require fresher news; and they re ! quire molt- than news. i The Weeklt Times gathers off the tvpes of j every passing week whatever has lasting- in- tervst to the people at larre, and sets it lefore j them in such generosity of paer and print as i would have astonished us all twenty veorsauro.
