New York Letter to the Pittsburg Dispatch.
A preat deal id written about the
preachers of the metropolis, and porticu
arly aliout those who, like Talruage,
kwp their names constantly before the
public by mean o? bkn, lectured ami
publinheil aeetnon. But there are some
verj noteworthy clergymen who draw
enormous audiences anil piMHess great
ability, who are rarely heard of in print,
allliough known up and down the city.
Unetdioimlily Uer. Dr. John R. Paxton
Htandn at the heiul or the ministry in
New York. Even Dr. John Hall anil
lr. Morgan IMx do not equal Paxton in
eloquence, originality and remarkable
independence of thought.
To begin with, Paxton ' congregation
contains more wealth at the preuent time
than any other church in the United
States. The mere fact that within a ra
dius of half a dozen pews on the middle
able sit Jay Gould, Kutjsell Sage, lleber
K. Biidiop and Henry M. Finger is of it
Helf Butticiunt to prove the assertion.
This is only representative of the
wealth that has sittings and listens every
Sablwth to the common sense discourses
of the brilliant young preacher.
Flagler is one of the chief directors of
the Standard Oil Company. He nits
pretty well up the aisle, while back by
the door, in fact within one pew of the
door, modeHtly sits S. C. T. Dodd. the
resident attorney of the Standard and a
lawyer who is said to know more about
corporation practice than a.ir man in
the nation. I could mention a score or
more of Tery rich men in the church,
embracing merchants, lawyers, brokers
and the like, but it will suitice to re
mark that the aggregate wealth of the
congregation is over tj(M).0(N).0)0.
While millionaires and aristocratic so
ciety people sit dowa stairs, the galleries
are crowded morning a-d evenitu with
hundreds or young men who are simply
bound up in Paxton.
Dr. Paxton's church is known as the
West Presbyterian, and is situated on
West Forty-Second street, aliout midway
Fifth and Sixth avenues. It is a Terr
liantlsome structure, particularly in the
interior. The galleries are novel in their
construction, having been altered about
eighteen months ago. Instead of being
arranged in jiews there are boxes all
around the three sides. The boxes are
rented as they are in theaters, so that a
large family can liave an entire box. or
a small family can have part of a box.
A gooa many young men rent a single
seat in one of the compartment. The
boxes are very conirortable, containing
easy chairs, Ixiok racks, and are lavishly
and richly upholstered. The boxes are
in tiers, one above the other, so as to af
ford a good view of the house.
The church was always a large and
prosMrous one, but when the venerable
imstor and hymnist. Rev. Dr. Thomas
S. Hastings, reigned and the eloquent
Paxton was culled, the church increased
in size, atHuence and influence until its
contributions and congregations are enor
mous. Less than a year ago Dr. Paxton.
at the close of his sermon, without giv
ing any p-evious notice, asked money
for the building of a uew cliael among
the poorer classes over on Tenth avenue
and Sixty-fo trth stret-t. The baskets
were passed and f'JI.tNMi were rai;ed in a
few moments. This is a sample of the
charity of the church and the influence
wrought by an appeal by the pas, jr.
The church will seat over 1,500. but there
is scarcely a Surday that there are not
2,000 ieople present at the services.
Chairs are placed in front of the pulpit,
camp chairs are distributed in the gal
leries, and yet jieople stand in the aisles
and by the doors, ami ladies sit on the
pulpit steps.
It might lie well to mention how the
millionaires, and esjiecially Jay Gould,
came to become member of the church.
It is Paxton's magnetism and his prac
tical every day common sense that drew
them. Gould never went to church
regularly liefore. He had a pew for his
faiuily in a prominent Kpiscopal Church
but rarely attended himself. His young
est daughter, Helen Gould, first came to
Paxton's church. She went with a
friend and admired the preacher very
much. Finally she liecame a frequent
attendant and then joined the church
one Sabliuth morr'ng, receiving a very
happy tribute from Ilixton as to
her Christian virtues and sweet life.
Since then, although very young,
she has betn made superintendent
of one of tl e large missions connected
with the church, and is said to spend a
great deal of time ard moaey among the
poor. Ste promises to become one of the
great women lenefactors of the metropo
lis before many yean elapse. Helen's
enthusiasm oer Paxton induced her
father to go and herr him. Paxton never
spares the millionaire and the great cor
poration, and, oddly enough, all the mill
ionaires and coriioration managers in
his congregations like his criticisms.
Russell Sage is reported to have said that
he got more good points from Paxton as
to the way in which ra:lrouds should be
decently and hororahlr conducted than
he ever got from meetings of directors.
At any rate, Gould was delighted. He
had his son George go with him one
evening, and George also was charmed.
Dr. Paxton's salary is 12,000 a year,
the largest received by anr metropolitan
pastor. Dr. John Hall, of the Fifth Ave
nue Presbyterian Chucrh, is understood
to come next He gets 10.000 in iroI.L
that being the price stipulated when he
was inuuceti to leave his large church in
Dublin aliout fifteen years ago,
John R. Paxton is a southerner by
birth, and still retains a stromr Sonthern
accent that is very noticeable in all his
discourses, and reuile -a it difficult some
times for strangers to understand him at
first.

Evening funeral services are said to be
growing very potmlar in New York just
now. There is, however, the same dif
fidence and backwardness about being
"it," which was always noticeable in
these little social gatherings.

read of an orchard house in full swing;
of a stage in a conservatory; of melons

plants requiring to be dressed; of peacliea

of pines wanting hot water pipes under

Gardners, also, are directed to do dreail

to staUe-4lw carnations, to strike veroni

liouvardias, to reduoe cliinliers, put emlive
into colli pits, prick out celery, and fctick

lie done are as uninviting as possible.
They are full, so we read, of red spiders,
greenfly, earwigs, mealy bugs, wire
worms, caterpillars, carrot grubs, onion
maggots, mildew, snails, ants, slugs, scale,

-' One Kingdom la Mature.
WhOo it may seem singular that the
division line ltween animals anil plants
cannot he clearly traceil some forms
appearing to belong to either or ttoth
kingdoms it is still more remarkable
that mineral substances should seem to
be living creatures. One of the most in
teresting finds in the ocean depths is
Huxley's Iiuthyhius, made of shapeless,
motionless slime. It has been supposed
to be the common origin of tho animal
and vegetaUe kingdom, but its organic
cliaractcr hr.s lately lieen questioned, and
many naturalists now consider it only
gelatinous gypsum. In Eozoon Canaden
sis we have another animal of a few
years ago which is now regarded as a
mineral substance. Arkansaw Traveler.

Old Benderlj Makes a IteputaUon.
Texas Siftings.
Old Benderly had returned from the
club the other evening, when, as he hung
up his overcoat on the hall hat rack and
prepared to go up stairs, he heard such
strangely excited voices in the tiarlor
that he paused to listen.
A voice tliat he recognized at once as
belonging to tliat fast looking young
Snyder he had warned Maria to be care
ful about, said contemptuously:
'Peace, woman, and weary me no
longer by your reproaches. I tell you
the day of my wedding with Alice
Montresso is fixed, and, by heavens.
nothing shall prevent my union.
Couhl tliese words be addressed to his
own daughter? Yes, indeed it was Ma
ria s sob-choked tones that replied:
"This. then, is the reward for mv sac
rifice, my devotion. Ruined and for
saken, you taunt me with vour latest
conquest. Monster coward !
It only reouired a second for Ilenderly
to rush up stairs and get a shotgun out
of the closet. The next moment he
burst into the parlor with blazing eyes,
and hurling the black-hearted betrayer
to tlie floor, he placed tlie muzzle of "his
breech-loader at his temple, hissing:
'Villain, swear to me that vou will
make an honest woman of this poor
dujied angel, or I will strew the floor
with your devilish brains!
Hooray! sliouted voung Snvder, sit
ting and clapping his hands. Tliat's way
up. Magnif! Splendid!"
"iieautitul. papa, tncore! Kncore!
Bravo!" added Maria delightedly. "I
never saw anything lietter."

the bewildered (larent, shouldering
arms.
"We were afraid that you would ol-
ject to my taking part in tlie private the

it. But you act better than any of us
doesn't he, Bobby?"
"You let," replied Bobby, fervently.
