Palatka has undoubtedly the largest lady in the State her weight is only 8.TO . pounds. Two marriages are whispered about town, and one will prolblj take place ere another Sabbath shall arrive. It was talked on the streets yesterday that the day's buMinetus was the best 'of the season. Verily, old times are back in Florida. Word from Mr. II. O. Ham, of Penicl. informs ns that a festival for the benefit of the school will be given to-night at that place. President Coleman's private car Corn wall, of the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Kail way, pulled out of the city yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. H. The morning south bound train on the Jacksonville, Tampa ami Key West Rail way, was late yesterday. It had an im mense load of passengers. Every seat on the south bound trait was also taken Sunday one of A. 1. The soot was simjily burnt out . of the chimney. Mrs. L. Falk, yesterday morning, took charge of the erst while Bangor House. The name has been scraped off tha corner windows, and as "The Arlington our new hotel is expected soon to blos som out as a first-class hotel. With its new dining room and other additions, it is expected by its new proprietors to be. come a paying institution. The outlook is fair. Palatka appears to be infected ' with tramps to an alarming degree. Accounts reach us of several instances where these vagabonds hare made so bold, as to de mand viands, after assuring themselves that no gentleman was near to interfere. The Mayor informed a reporter yesterday that he bad issued orders among patrol men to rid the city of such a nuisance immediately. The porters of our hotels display a commendable interest in the success of their respective establishments. It was quite amusing, while riding down from the upper depot yesterday morning about 4 -J30 o'clock, to hear Joe and Alla?rtf of the Putnam and Phoenix, respectively, recount their adventures in "hauling in, as they express it. the passengers from the boats and trains. Albert was the most emphatic, while Joe was the most hilarious. Haul em in, boys, the more the merrier. PERSONAL. W. P. BUDGES. His IKscourse at the Methodist Church A Great Organizer. The Methodist Episcopal Church of Palatka begins the new conference year under the most favorable auspices, and it will in all probability prove to be one of the most successful in its history, both spiritually and materially. The new pastor, Rev. Francis It. Bridges, assigned to this church by the Florida Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at its recent meeting at Leesburg. has been given a most cordial welcome by the members, while Mr. Bridges himself has entered upon his new field of labor in the most exemplary and zeuloua spirit. The new pastor is a native Florid ian, and comes to Palatka with a reputation as a preacher, and especially a a worker and organizer second to that of none in Florbla. With an experience of ten years in the Mas ter's service, nine of which he has been in connection with the Florida Annual Conference, and with the ground work laid at a noted theological seminary, Mr. Bridges will undoubtedly do great good in the Palatka church, and will get good also. At Leesburg, hii last appointment, he was greatly IikJ, and the members of the church of Palatka are congratu lating themxelves npon securing an ex cellent pastor. The church parsonage has been refitted with new carpets, furniture and trim mings, and with a new coat of paint is now a comfortable home for the new shepherd. On Sunday morning Mr. Bridges I preached an earnest and edifying aer- mon to an interested and attentive con gregation, choosing as his text from the twenty-second verse of the ninth chapter of the Gospel according to Mark "But if thou canst do anything, have compas sion on ns and help ns." Those present expressed the opinion that the sermon was one of the most earnest I eloquent ever delivered in this church and all were greatly impressed with the preachers powers as an orator and' as a sermonizer. The most noticeable feature of the dis course was the great earnestness of the speaker, carrying with it the impress of honesty of purpose and a depth of faith that is indispensable to a minister of tlie Goxpel, if he would do the good that his office demands. Our space forbids an extended report of this most excellent sermon, but the church can be congratulated on the ac quisition of its new pastor. Home Fertilisers, Yesterday morning a reporter enjoyed a very pleasant and profitable conversa tion with Mr. George Hutchinson, of Crescent City, who was on hia way to Jacksonville by the early Cuban Fast Mail, on the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway. Mr. Hutchinson is engaged quite extensively in the manu facture of fertilizer. His experiments and experience in that line have been ample to give bia judgment value, and he confirmed the opinion expressed by contributors to Tux Palatka Nkws that fertilizers made from decomposed veget able matter is of inestimable value in the cultivation of plant growth of a per manent nature, such as trees, especially in toil as light as is that of Florida. Mr. Hutchinson reports bis business as ex ceeding his most sanguine anticipation, which seems to show that our fruit growers are learning to depend leas upon foreign productions in t!iat line, and more upon home ami nature's productions. r8-P A Ti MT C00DS.ETC ffitt-AfflUAL ip Sfelliilllk AT F O IP U L A R OWE WEEK, FOR Ererf m. 2,000 yards and have first choice.
