We have received the . following letter from Mr. Schom er, and we gladly give it the same publicity that we gave our own editorial. Dear Sir: In an editorial, in the issue of your worthy publication of Oc- tober 22nd, you oppose the idea of convening a Jewish World Congress, which should give Is rael the form and character of a body of fixed meaning and defin ite identity, and which should represent, and act for, the whole Jewish people in any and all Jew ish questions and matters. Your main reason against ' such a Congress is the fear that - it will give basis to the conten tion of anti-Semites that we are a separate nationality. This fear, Sir, has no rational significance in the face of the very charges which have been at all times leveled against us, even though we never had a Jewish World Congress. As a matter of fact, all the charges leveled against us are only possible un VJder the abnormal COLLECTIVE condition we exist in as Jews; a condition which precludes the mind of men from being psycho logical and logical about us. Permit me to assure you, Sir, that the idea of a Jewish World Congress is not the result of a whim or caprice of an individual or individuals. It is based on a rational and systematic compre hension of the Jewish question. It interprets a thought and a need which have always been FELT, but the fundamental principles underlying that thought and need have never been grasped in their full signifi cance. Let us see: There are about fourteen million human beings calling themselves Jews. It is known as a historic fact, that once they lived as a nation on their own soil with certain ethi cal laws and prophetic teachings for a rule of individual and col lective conduct. It is further more known as a fact, that the loss of their own soil and their dispersion over the globe has not deprived them of their national consciousness, that they are recognized as Jews by others and lay claim themselves to that ap pellation. They still Insist that they constitute the Jewish peo ple whose aim is to abide by the laws and teachings of their prophets. It is evident, there fore, that this people is endowed with a spiritual object as an aim of existence, and that being un willing to relinquish its corpor ate existence among the nations, it must be looked upon as a Jew ish corporate body of interna tional scope. Let us now take a look at that body to understand its outward semblance. ""We see before us, not an inter national Jewish body corporate only an international MULTI TUDE of Jews. Now, what is the Jewish Question? The Jewish Question seems to be definite and fixed. It address FOX. EDITOP iSThk GpeatSouthwes es itself to us Jews, and solely to us AS Jews. It has nothing what ever to do with anything OUT SIDE of the Jews. All that talk of ethnic, religious, political, economic, and other similar causes underlying the Jewish Question is pompous nothing ness. The Jewish Question is con cerned with only one cause, and there is only one cause which keeps it alive. In all the persecu tions and sufferings of the Jews, in all the misfortunes and calam ities which overtake us in con sequence of our being Jews, the Jewish Question is always the same, and it is this: m Since we, Jews, keep on de claring and insisting that there is a Jewish People and that we are its members, why do we not endow our People with the qualities and attributes which enter into the make-up of a nor mal body? Why do we not en dow our People with a Head shipwith a Self? By letting our People exist without a Headship without a Self, we are actually violating two great prin ciples of the mind the PRIN CIPLE OF IDENTITY and the PRINCIPLE OF CONSISTEN CY. It is because of that, that mankind is unable to identify us, and subconsciously regards both, our Peoples and ourselves, as something monstrous, unnatural and mysterious. Because we are violating the PRINCIPLE OF IDENTITY, mankind does not understand us and entertains a subconscious repugnance, fear, superstition and prejudice against us. That is the real reas on why we and our People ar$ styled, "The Jewish Spectre," "The Jewish Phantom," "The Jewish Ghost, and the "Jewish Mystery." MANKIND CANNOT IDENTIFY US ! It is also for the same reason that we are hated and accused of everything that is base and vile, even of such peculiar mysterious crimes as XX. - Price 5 Cents poisoning of wells, ritual mur ders, secret conspiracies against the world, and so forth, and so on. Because we Jews are violating the PRINCIPLES OF CONSIST ENCY, by straining all our ener gies to keep alive our Jewish People, yet permitting it to ex ist without a Headship with out a Self, there is chaos, dis order and confusion in our Peo ple and among ourselves, and there are so many minor Jewish questions that remain unansw ered, since there is no Headship no self of our People to ans wer them. It is also for the same reason that we and our Jewish People are always groping in the dark, and fail in every attempt to combat anti-Semitism. The mind seems to have its own mysterious ways and means for punishing trangressors against its laws. In our case it is punishing us by and with that terrible prejudice which finds expression in continuous perse cutions, oppressions and afflic tions of our brethren wherever they are. You will agree with me, Sir, that fear in itself, as a subjec tive fact, has no rational signfi cance. To yield to fear at any time is not the wisest thing to do, particularly now, in the face of the monstrous wave of anti Semitism, which threatens our very lives. To yield to fear now, means to yield to destruction. If we value life and happiness we must obey the demand of Reason. We must give to our Jewish People the form which the mind requires. The Jewish People must become something REAL, and cease to be a SHAD OW. We must endow our People with a Headship with a Self, in the form of a Jewish World Con gress.
