By ESTHER VANDEVEER Keuben Kastner was night watch man at the office of Jones Brothers, dealers iu railway supplies. One night his wife sure hiui his supper, he went to the little bed where his two children lay, kissed them, then bade his wife adieu, with a sigh. "What's the matter, Iteuben?" she asked. "1 dunno." said Kastuer. "I got a presentyment." "A presentiment of what?" asked his wife. "That gomep'ii's goin' to happen. Somep'n turraliie somep'n that'll I wive you and the children with nothiu' to eat and no roof over your heads." "Aud I've got a presentiment, too," said Mrs. Kustner. "What's that?" "That soiuep'u is goin' to happen that'll set us all up." "Oh. you're foolin'!" said the hus band as lie walked away. "You never take anything serious." Kastuer went to the oHiee, where lie relieved the porter, who acted as day watchman, and hegau his dreary night watch, lie walked about from one room to another, occasionally going into a room where stood the safe. To do this he was obliged to take out a key and turu the holt in the spring lock in the door that couuected tliis room with the main office. After tak ing a look at the safe he would lei the door close aud would sit down in an office chair, and at the expiration of an hour would go through tlie proc ess again. He had opened the door to the safe room and gone inside for a look when throe men—where they came from he conld not surmise—?o!zofl him from T« hind and threw him to the Door. Pro dileiug a 4'onl. they lioimil him ham) and foot and gagged him. Then, sit ting him i:i a chair, the.v tied him to it. and one of them, knocking oft' the knob of the safe door with a hammer, put a charge of nitroglycerin iu the hole made and attached a fuse*. Hav ing done this the.v placed gunny hags over the safe to deaden the sound, lighted the free end of the fuse and nil left the oliice. Their idea was to blow open the safe, killing the watch man. on the principle that dead men tell no tales, return and help them selves to the contents. When they left the room the door was closed h.v the spring, and Kastner was shut up in the safe room while a sputtering fire was running along the fuse toward the explosive. A great many things came to Kast ner while watching that running lire. He sa-v himself blown into pulp by the explosion: he saw his wife waking from slumber to think about her lonely husband watching through the long night: he saw his little children sleep ing in their bed with their arms around each other's neck. lie would not die. He would make an effort for life. If he could get down on the floor he might possibly escape the worst. He began a violent rock ing, a swaying from side to side. This he kept up till he upset the chair. His fall broke the cord that bound him to it. There was still a foot of the fuse trailing on the floor not yet consumed. Kastner. having his hands and feet tied, could not reach the lire or kick it. but he could roll toward it. This he did snd presently rolled on it. A sot her danger confronted biin. Would the fire he smothered or would 13-181 Ifc lgflta hi»_clothinj_aBd first_buru biiii^ I AREY00 KIDDIN& HA&PM', or^ oo You F. D. HEVENER, Attorney for Plaintiff. 13-17 Her Presentiment MeANi \T? Meanwhile Kastuer lay on the fuse, praying that it would be smothered Gradually the heat under him died down. He watched to see if it were burning beyond his body, but since it did not he made up his mind that it had been extinguished. At last the robbers, having conclud ed that the explosion had failed, after debating the propriety of kicking down the door, decided that they had better get out while the.v could. Some one might have gone into the safe room from another entrance. Gee! Ain't Brother Nut Harry the Trifler? NMRT"/ OF (TouftSe MfAH T' then blow him to pieces? Tie lay flat on tbs lire and felt the beat beneath him. He beard a rattling at tbe door. The burglars, anxious to see what was go ing on within tbe safe room, were try ing to open It. but, finding it locked, could not do so without breaking It down, snd this might attract attention from those without Since nothing seemed to be gained by effecting an entrance, they determined to await the explosion. When the porter went into the safe room in the morning and saw the night watchman on the Hour, hound hand and foot, he knew at oiiee what had happened. He released Kastner aud telephoned for a member of the firm to come immediately to the otlice. since an attempt had been made to blow up the safe. The senior, Mr. .tones, came without waiting for his breakfast, and when he saw the safe and heard Kastner'* sto ry he exclaimed: "Thank heaven! There was $ M).KNI In there in bank bills." Kastner went home to breakfast in a carriage, and when his wife saw him •light site said: "1 reckon it's my presentiment that's come true, isn't it. Renb. seein' you're coining home that way?" "Well, rnehbe It is." And drawing ten SUM) bills, a gift from his employ ers. from his pocket, lie showed them to her. Then he sat down to breakfast and -told the story of his night's adventure to his wife and children. LORD SOMEBODY OR OTHER By M. For the tirst live days of our cap tivity we -u ere closely guarded, and there could be no thought of our es cape.
