I believe in the curse of ignor ance, in the efficacy of schools, in the dignity of teaching, and in the joy of serving others. I believe in wisdom as revealed in human lives as well as in the pages of a print ed book in lessons taught, not so much by precept as by example in ability to work with the hands as well as to think with the head in everything that makes life large and lovely. I believe in the present and its opportuni ties, in the future and its promises and in the divine joy of living. Amen. Edwin Osgood Grover. NO THOUGHTFUL MAN ever came to the end of his life and had time and a little space of calm from which to look back upon it, who did not know and acknowledge that it was what he had done un selfishly and for others, and noth ing else, that satisfied him in the retrospect, and made him feel that he had played the man. THat alone seems to him the real measure of himself, the real standard of his manhood.* And so men grow by having responsibility laid upon them.'the burden of other people's business.
