From Saturday's Daily
Mrs. Chas. Boardman and family,
came up from their home at Fargo
last night and will spend the week
end with Charlie.
Mrs. John D. Gray was called to
Lisbon today by the death of her sis
ter, Mrs. T. C. Patterson, who passed
away this morning.
N. P. Hanson, the Fargo tailor, is
up today, coming in on No. 7, and is
looking after business interests in the
city.
Mrs. Vic Landquist and two chil
dren went down to Fargo this morn
ing to spend the day in the gateway
city. They will return this evening.
W. McDermott and W. E. G. String
er of Cooperstown, were Valley City
visitors last night, coming down
from the Griggs county capital on
business matters.
M. R. Nelson, formerly of this city
but now of Minneapolis, was a Valley
City visitor yesterday, driving around
the city in one of those new Buick
"4" coupes.
Editor McGillivray of the Nome Tri
bune, was a Valley City visitor yes
terday and while in the city paid his
respects at the Times-Record office.
He was accompanied by his son.
Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Boyd and their
son Burton autoed to Dickinson on
Thursday to spend the week-end visit
ing with their daughter, Ella May,
who is teaching in the Dickinson pub
lic schools this year.
Jack Chulse is building a very nice
znodern bungalo of five rooms south
of the Platou hospital so the Thomp
son Yards informs us and they should
know as they are selling the material
for the house. This is going to be a
nice house when completed.
For the benefit of those living at
the place the Episcopal Hall has in
stalled a tennis court. The fences at
the ends of the court were completed
yesterday and the students will soon
be putting in their spare time at this
healthful game we suppose.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. S. Thomson and
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heimes autoed
to Fargo yesterday morning in Mr.
Thomson's new Hudson coach. They
returned home last night about eight
o'clock, having had a good trip.
Contractor Ed. Romfo is building a
fine modern bungalo just northeast of
the St. Catherine school, and when
completed will be a dandy dwelling
place for someone needing a modern
house. Mr. Romfo is one of the best
boosters we have in Valley City and
has built several fine houses.
Two more ball players reported for
duty last night, coming in on the eve
ning trains. They are Buck Enger,
the star right hand pitcher, and W.
A. Finch, a lefty. These are the first
of the contract men to show up but
we suppose there will be more in to
day and tomorrow as they are all
required to report by Monday.
G. H. Condy, of the firm of Ham
mer-Condy Co., of Cooperstown, N
D., was a Valley City visitor between
trains today, coming in on No. 1. Mr.
Condy lives in Minneapolis but has
large interests at Cooperstown and
left on No. 7 this morning for that
place.
Mrs. W. T. Craswell, who has been
spending the winter in New Mexico,
returned to the city this afternoon on
No. 2, coming back by the way of
California where she stopped off at
various points enroute to visit friends.
Mrs. Craswell is feeling fine and her
friends are pleased to see her back
home again.
Theo. G. Thompson, one of the
handsome young business men of
Cooperstown, N. D., was a caller on
his friend, the editor of the Times
Record yesterday. Mr. Thompson had
been here spending the day looking
after business matters, and returned
in the early afternoon. We were cer
tainly pleased to greet Mr. Thomp
son.
Dean Knute Froysaa returned
Thursday from the Music festival
held in Grand Forks. The Grand
Forks Herald commented on his play
ing as follows: "Dean Knute Froysaa
head of the music department at the
State Teachers College in Valley
City, who lias for some years been
prominently known among the musical
people of the state gave as a violin
number, 'La Folia, Variations Serieu
ses' by Corelli-Leonard, an ambitious
composition that he did Tyith skill
and finish. 'The Rosary' was feel
ingly given as an encore."
The baseball management received
word yesterday from Ernest P. Menne Bank.—Nome Tribune.
who is at present at Lansing, Mich.,
that he would report for duty on
Monday. Menne will hold down first
for the Hi-Liners this season. He
played with Huron last season and
was the best first sacker in the lea
gue, having a fielding average of 987
for the season and hitting 278. Menne
fielded 1007* chances out of 1020 last
year which means that they will have
to throw them pretty wild to get by
first base this year.
The North Dakota Independent Tel
ephone Co., started the. work of mov
ing the telephone poles in the ball
grounds yesterday afternoon. This
company is moving the Soo Line poles
which are east of the telephone poles,
and will move the telephone poles as
soon as these re moved out of the
way. The east fence around the ball
grounds was completed yesterday and
work has been started on the north
fence. This will be completed the
first of the week and the ball grounds
will be all ready for the regulars to
start their training work.
The members of the League of Wo
men Voters met at the Commercial
Club rooms of the City Hall last night
Matters of routine business were dis
cussed and those present listened to
an address by Maj. D. S. Ritchie. Maj.
Ritchie spoke on "The Primary Elec
tion Law", explaining the workings of
the law and comparing it with the
former system of caucuses and con
ventions. His talk was decidedly in
teresting to the ladies and gave them
a much better insight into the elec
tion laws of the state. The attend
ance was good and the meeting a very
good one.
The Odd Fellows held a special
meeting at their hall on fifth avenue
last night to discuss arrangements
for the securing of the location of the
Odd Fellows home at this place. A
delegation was elected to attend the
meeting of the Grand Lodge at Grand
Forks and advance the claims of this
city to the home. This committee is
as follows: Wm. H. McPherson, Jno.
Halverson, Fred Colby, F. W. Heidel,
and Fred Fredrickson. The report of
the delegation that attended the meet
ing at Oakes on Thursday was heard.
The committee report a very good
time and state that the Oakes lodge
pledge their support to Valley City
for the home.
Phillip Hornbacher opened up his
new grocery store this morning in the
Elmora Flatts building. He has re
painted his new quarters, installed
new shelving and has a mighty neat
looking place of business. He reports
a very good business for the first day
and feels that the service which he
expects to give his customers will re
sult in a continuation of the good pat
ronage.
Wm. McPherson says that he re
ceived a letter from Jim Algeo today
stating that he was moving to Sioux
Falls, S. Dak., next week and will en
gage in business there. Mr. Algeo
was formerly of this city but has been
living at Bismarck for a number of
years. Mr. Algeo sends his regards to
all his friends in the city and states
that he hopes some of the Valley City
fans will follow the Hi-Liners to
Sioux Falls when they play there as
he is anxious to see some familiar
faces from Valley City.
The Masonic Blue Lodge held a reg
ular meeting at the Temple last eve
ning, the business session being fol
lowed by a dance in the ball room. In
addition to routine business a Tem
ple committee composed of three
members was elected and is as fol
lows, Lee Cowell, elected for three
years, S. P. Ellis, elected for two
years, and D. S. Ritchie, elected for
one year. The lodge has been invit
ed to exemplify the second degree on
a class of candidates at the district
meeting to be held in Jamestown on
May 18. The work in this degree
will start at about 3:30 in the after
noon. There will be a banquet served
at 6:00 o'clock and the Grand Lodge
will present a moving picture of inter
est to. the order in the evening ses
sion. As many local members as can
arrange to be present are. urged to
do so. The dance following the meet
ing was not very well attended but
was very enjoyable to those present.

great tomorrow that whatsoever

I believe in the curse of ignor
ance, in the efficacy of schools, in
the dignity of teaching, and in the
joy of serving others. I believe in
wisdom as revealed in human lives
as well as in the pages of a print

much by precept as by example in

everything that makes life large

out-of-doors. I believe in laughter,
in love, in faith, in all ideals and

all we are and all we do. I believe
in the present and its opportuni

and in the divine joy of living.

NO THOUGHTFUL MAN ever
came to the end of his life and had
time and a little space of calm
from which to look back upon it,
who did not know and acknowledge
that it was what he had done un
selfishly and for others, and noth
ing else, that satisfied him in the
retrospect, and made him feel that
he had played the man. THat alone
seems to him the real measure of
himself, the real standard of his
manhood.* And so men grow by
having responsibility laid upon
them.'the burden of other people's
business. Their powers are put
out at interest, and they get usury
in kind. They are like men multi
plied. Each counts manifold.
Meh who live with an eye only
upon what is their own are dwarfed
beside them—seem fractions while
they are integers. The trust
worthiness of men trusted seems
often to grow with the trust.
