Wheat, oats, corn, potatoes and beans are the crops grown. I have no free labor in the way of chil dren to help out, all labor and horse power is hired and charged to fields. In a 12-year period of operation I found myself regularly putting in new fresh money to keep up. To find the trouble I started to keep books, on po tatoes first, then on all crops. Five years of record on potatoes and three years on th& farm as a whole is now complete. In the three years of rec ord fine was a bumper, one a fair and. one a poor crop, so taken as a whole the field returns will average what we can expect in the future. To .reduce space I bunch the three years together. The farm is equipped with a full set of tools of all kinds, for which I have made no charge except for repairs and renewals of worn parts. Checking up in the books I find, in the three years, 1916, 1917 and 1918, I have employed and paid for: 11,044 hours of man labor at 80 cents $8,818.20 16,648 hours of horse labor at 20 cents 3,829.60 Field supplies, repairs, seed and taxes 1,256.62 Total Crop returns, 1916..... Crop returns, 1917 Crop returns, 1918 Total v.. $7,899.42 .$8,2X8.21 1,205.69 2,004.45 6,423.85 Loss ...$1,476.07 In other words, in a three-year op eration the field returns are short $1,476.07 of paying the actual cost of producing, even when the tools are furnished free and no charge made for land interest nor fertilizer. I have grown potatoes in large quantities, my original idea, or guess, as to cost, was $35 per acre. Books now show I Was nearly 100 per cent off. It may be interesting, to other farmers to know how this crop varies as to cost and yield with every year, so I stick in the record, cents omitted: Acre yield 6,800 pounds 8,800 pounds 2,240 pounds 7,400 pounds 200 pounds Year Acre cost 1915... $77 191 6 80 191 7 62 191 8 94 191 9 47 The yields given are in marketable potatoes, small potatoes are not ac counted for. They were left in the field unpicked. This shows, when the best modern tools are used, that the average acre cost is $72 and the average yield 4,928 pounds,'K giving a fraction over $1.50 per 100 pounds as the labor cost of producing sacked potatoes deliver ed at local warehouse or loading sta tion, Ten cents must be added to this to cover the use of lapd and if we add another 10 cents for profit we will have $1.70 as'the actual cost. I see no prospect of receiving this for po tatoes so I have now stowed away my tools and will quit growing them. The results shown by my books is a revelation to me. I now know if operating costs remain stationary it will require a 30 per cent increase in farm prices tq. make things come oiit. i*""- 1-.1. We* will, stick. F. A, NYSTROM.
