In this letter Mr. Neumeister says: "Whoever told anybody North Da kota was selling its flour to the peo ple at $9 a barrel must have been try ing to sell him a membership in the Nonpartisan league. A short while ago one of our merchants at Oakes called me into his store and told me some farmers in this vicinity had re quested him to obtain flour prices from the state mill at Drake. He pro duced the quotation, and the figures would not enable him to sell state flour on a competitive basis with other well-known brands." Farmers in several Wisconsin locali ties are having considerable fun over this letter. They have copies of a let ter written by J. A. McGovern of the North Dakota mill and elevator de partment showing that the Drake mill has sold flour right in Wisconsin, purchased at the Drake state mill for $8.30 a barrel. Mr. McGovern in the letter says: "We have a flour that is called first (Continued from page 4) was the chairman of the League state convention and was so popular that he was proposed for nearly every of fice under consideration. Mr. Vollom was born in Norway 43 years ago, be ing brought to Minnesota when five. His father's illness made him head of the family at the age of* 14. He farmed until 1900 and then entered business to earn enough money to complete his education, graduating from Concordia college, Moorhead, Minn., in 1905. Since that time Mr. Vollom has devoted practically his en tire time to managing farmers' co-op erative enterprises, including stores and elevators. He is now manager of the largest farmers' co-operative tel ephone company in the state, the Gar den Valley company, with 3,300 sub scribers and 2,400 stockholders, of whom 1,800 are farmers. Mr. Vollom is married and has five children. Paul I. D. Ostby, candidate for rail road and warehouse commissioner, was born in Minnesota 42 years ago, the son of a minister, who was also a farm owner, and has been a farmer since the age of 17. He is now oper ating one of the best stock and diver sified farms in Freeborn county. He has always been interested in public affairs and has made an especial study of the laws of the railroad and ware house commission and the duties of the office. He has also been active in farmers' co-operative enterprises. He is married and has 10 children—five boys and five girls. George L. Siegel, candidate for justice of the Minnesota supreme court, is a brilliant St. Paul attorney, who has consistently championed the justice of the cause of organized farmers and labor. He is 35 years old and was born in St. Paul. Since his graduation from the St. Paul Col lege of Law, Mr. Siegel has served two terms in the lower house of the Minnesota legislature, and in the 1917 session was chairman of the commit tee on labor. We have shipped one carload of this first clears to a farmers' club at Whitewater, Wis., and after trying it out they or dered a second car. That has not been delivered yet. We shipped three car loads to Cleveland, Ohio. The only trouble with this flour is that we can not make enough of it to fill :our or ders." Of course the Drake mill is only a small experimental mill of about 250 barrels a day capacity. When the 3,000-barrel Grand Forks mill is run ning the demand for state flour can more nearly be met. BROOMCORN WATCHED Importation of broomcorn has been prohibited except under permit which provides for careful disinfection at port of entry because such importa tions are likely to spread the corn borer pest. Living larvae of the corn borer were found recently in 97 bales of broomcorn imported from Italy. Broomcorn is considered responsible for the fact that the corn borer is now found in New Hampshire, Massachu setts, New York and Pennsylvania. Other plants likely to harbor the corn borer are likewise under quarantine. sentative has been 100 per cent. Prior to studying law Mr. Siegel obtained business experience as a clerk, ac countant and credit man. He is mar ried and the father of a six-year-old daughter. The picture and biographical sketch of Miss Lily Anderson, candidate for state treasurer, will be found on the Farm Woman's page. AN OHIO BOOSTER Editor Nonpartisan Leader: As I withdrew from the Grange some years ago because it was dominated by an organization whose leaders were and are yet the pliant tools of the interests which exploit the producer and whose hold it seemed impossible to break, you will understand that I rejoiced when the League was organized. It will continue to make good because it is the most practical organization of its kind in the world today. I only wish I lived in a League state so that I could be a $16 sucker. We who can belong to one of the old parties for nothing are getting a good deal less than nothing out of our membership. I want to say that the farm bureau is, like the Grange, allied with the farmers' exploiters. The un pardonable sin of the League, in the eyes of politicians and other tools of Big Biz, is that ,it is getting some where. That is why its leaders are persecuted. As a matter of fact the leaders of every movement th«t really tried to do anything worth while have been persecuted since the race was created. I want to say that your report of that United Farmers of America movement has filled me with hope that there is something better in store for us in the field of national legislation. We certainly need a national organi zation such as the U. F. of A. prom ises to be. I certainly hope it gets under way speedily. ARTHUR S. HALL. Lebanon, Ohio.
