Goldbugs Believe Discretion the Better Part of Valor. The people's party men of the coun ty have been subjected to lots of abuse from the gold papers and others be cause they were determined not to turn their county convention into the taU end of a republican rally last Wed nesday evening. By coincidence or purposely, Congressman McCleary was billed for Willmar for the eve ning of the same day the people's party county convention was in ses sion. The populist committee had se cured Prof. T. J. Caton, of Minneapo lis to address their convention, and set to work to try and arrange for a joint discussion between the two speak ers of the two parties. Both speakers were talented men end well conversant with the subjects issue, and it was supposed that me&ibers of all parties, desirous of learning the truth, would be pleased to be given an opportun ity to hear both sides presented. But the republicans of Willmar eould not see it in that light. They had ar ranged for a "strictly republican" rally and would under no considera tion entertain the idea of being foreed to listen to the other side part of the time. On the Saturday previous the Bryan & Lind Club sent the challenge to the Republican Club- A reply was received Moadaj cteeHmng to accept, jpn the grounds that time was too short consult with Mc€Jleary. The message sent read as follows: "Will jou debate Caton here Wednesday? ,Wire your wishes at oar expense (Signed 7ohn T. Otos, See'jr Bryan & Lind Club." Mr. McCIeary'p congressional dig nity prompted him ito doubt to regard this message with contempt, for BO re ply was received, although on his ar rival to Willmar Mr. McCleary acknowledged the receipt of the mes sage Monday evening. When the con vention was called^o order Wednes day, a resolution published elsewhere was passed, asking that & debate be arranged and a committee was ap- pointed to present the same to the re- s*n»j State Historical Society Icertaining what has been selected, thus avoiding buying the & same garment someone else has ordered. J. T. McCleary C. A. BIRCH.' Having thus been unsuccessful in arranging for a joint discussion, A was decided that a meeting be held at the Court House before adjourning the convention in the evening. Posters were printed reading as follows: TO-NIGHT. Come and hear the '"joint de bate" between Prof. J. Caton, of Mpls, and Hon. T. McCleary in print Before the People's Party con tention now in session at the. courthouse, the speech to begin .soon after eight o'clock. We have plead, begged, resolved: ,with and urged the Republican" :speaker and the parties having' !charge of his meeting to allow our. Silver Knight to meet him in per Ison. But for reasons best known ito themselves only, they refuse a joint discussion, and we shall go "it alone. Republican voters, if you are: righ£ why are your speakers: afraid of joint discussion? Prof. Caton will this evening re-' .ply to McCleary'a Minneapolis' .speech of last Saturday Eve. P. P. Committee. The crowd that assembled at the court house was immense, considering that nob and nor parade assisted in gathering the people. The court house hall was packed with voters, and Prof. Caton made a splendid speech, and subjected McClearyTs ar guments to a thorough analysis. Be tween four and five hundred voters were present and listened attentively. It is doubtful whether the big aggrega tion which assembled at the Opera House under the glamor and show purchased by Republican campaign money if culled down would hare shown many more voters than those who tread the way through the dark streets to the court house. The silver men feel very much pleased with the results of the day.
